Ateneo snares 6th FCBL Freego Cup


JAMIE Escaler nailed two triples in the last two minutes as Ateneo completed a 79-75 come-from-behind win over National University and bagged the 6th FCBL-Freego Cup over the weekend at Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.

Down by nine, 75-66, with less than three minutes left, the Eaglets suddenly came alive with Escaler sparking a 13-0 run to steal the title in the annual preseason tournament for high school.

After a basket by Mike Nieto and four consecutive free throws by Thirdy Ravena, Escaler knocked in his second triple that put the Eagles back on top, 77-75.

Escaler capped his fourth quarter explosion with two free throws to seal the title  in the tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Fresh Gear, Colt Commercial, Powerbest Marketing, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste and Insular Square of Cebu.

Nieto was later named Finals MVP after finishing with 22 points and 19 rebounds while Ravena, who chipped in 21 points, was named tournament MVP.

Far Eastern U downed Mapua, 68-63, to finish third.
