Cagayan survives PH Army; PLDT, Cignal win in Super Liga opener

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Super Liga, the country’s first club volley league, kicked off on a high note with Cagayan Valley, PLDT and Cignal coming out victors Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

The Rising Suns regrouped after a disappointing run in the fourth set to outlast the Philippine Army Lady Troopers, 25-23, 25-27, 26-24, 14-25, 15-12, in the main game.

PLDT MyDSL, led by Adamson star Pau Soriano, turned back PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo despite dropping the opening set, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20.

In the curtain raiser, University of Santo Tomas’ standout Venus Bernal topscored with 17 points to power the Cignal HD Spikers past the Petron Lady Blazers, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23.
