Super Liga: Ortiz fuels Petron win over PLDT

MANILA, Philippines—Maika Ortiz pumped in 22 points as Petron rebounded from its opening game loss to turn back PLDT MyDSL, 25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19 Wednesday night in the 2013 Philippine Super Liga Invitational at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Blaze Spikers, who barged into the win column after suffering a straight-set defeat at the hands of Cignal last Sunday, also got 13 points each from Angeli Tabaquero and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.

“Nung first game namin, I told them I wasn’t expecting that kind of performance,” said Petron coach Vivet Ponce de Leon, who also serves as assistant coach with the University of Santo Tomas women’s volleyball team. “But now they really worked on their jelling on the court.”

Angela Benting fired 21 points while Pau Soriano added 17 for the Speed Boosters, who were still within reach before a couple of mistakes put the game away with Petron’s Gretchen Ho providing the match point.
