MANILA, Philippines — Letran guard Franz Dysam and his wife were shot on Saturday in San Juan by unidentified men “riding in tandem”. Dysam survived but his wife was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, police and school authorities said.

Letran’s Athletic Director Vic Calvo O.P., on his Twitter account, said the couple was attacked along N. Domingo road after the Knights’ game against Lyceum, which they won, 61-53, at the San Juan Arena.

In a separate phone call by INQUIRER.net, Calvo said Dysam and his wife, Joan, were rushed to the San Juan Medical Center. He said Dysam was conscious and asked him to call his parents. Dysam will be transferred to the University of Sto. Tomas Hospital in Manila where he will undergo a second operation because “one more bullet was still lodged inside him”, Calvo added.

Letran head coach Caloy Garcia told INQUIRER.net in a separate phone interview that Dysam was shot “twice or thrice in the chest and the thigh”.

Senior Superintendent Bernardo Tambaoan said the shooting took place at around 7:45 p.m. Quoting witnesses, the police official said five shots were heard and the same number of empty shells was recovered from the scene.

Dysam’s camp had requested for additional security, Tambaoan said.

The identities of the suspects and the motive for the shooting remain unclear as of posting time.
