Cagayan survives Meralco in V-League quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines — Cagayan Valley got its ninth win but first had to get past Meralco, 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13, in the quarterfinals of the 10th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference on Friday.

The Lady Rising Suns recovered from a lousy start and a 0-5 deficit in the fifth set to keep their unscathed record to prop up its bid for top seeding.

Kannika Thipachot had 28 big points for Cagayan Valley, which also overcame an error-prone game, while Angeli Tabaquero added 21 markers, all from kills.

Earlier, Alyssa Valdez unloaded 27 points while Thai ace Lithawat Kesinee chipped in 19  as Smart-Maynilad defeated Philippine National Police, 17-25, 25-177, 25-20, 25-22.

After dropping the first set, the Net Spikers came back stronger and frustrated the Lady Patrollers, who stayed winless.
