Wushu artists bag silver as PH barges into medal chase

NAYPYITAW—Team Philippines secured its first medal, a silver, in wushu yesterday at Theikdi Indoor Stadium in the 27th Southeast Asian Games here.

Daniel Parantac, Norlence Ardee Catolico and John Keithley Chan scored 9.62 points to place second behind host Burma (Myanmar) bets Kyaw Zin Thit and Wia Phyo Aung, who accounted for 9.64 points in men’s duilian.

Thailand’s Kulsawadmongkol Baramee,  Sae Yang Pitaya and Sae Yang Sujinda netted the bronze with  9.60 points in the choreographed event featuring some form of sparring with or without weapons.

As expected, Burma flexed its muscles three days before the biennial Games formally open, with another wushu gold courtesy of Aung Si Thu in the men’s changquan.

The Burmese tallied 9.70 points, edging Indonesian Hulaefi Achmad (9.69). Vietnamese Xuan Hiep Tran took the bronze (9.68).

Burma added two more gold medals to its Chinlone haul as both the men’s and  women’s team dominated Chinlone non-repetition play at Theikdi Indoor Stadium (B).

The men overpowered Cambodia, 359-291, and the women topped Laos, 289-201.

In the men’s non-repetition preliminaries, Malaysia scored 259 and Singapore 159 to claim the bronzes.

Cambodia and Malaysia snared the women’s bronzes with 145 and 100, respectively, in the preliminaries.

In water polo at Zeyarthiri Swimming Pool, Thailand swamped Malaysia 9- 3.

Indonesia, featuring the Games’  youngest water polo competitor, 16-year-old Bradley Legawa, slammed Burma, fielding the Games’ oldest player Hla Naing, 45, with an unrelenting attack, 30-1.

Women’s taijiquan action saw Indonesian star Lindswell took the gold  with 9.71 points. Burma’s Wai Mar Tun Thein got the silver with 9.68 and Malaysia’s Lu Yi Chan took the bronze with 9.66.

The women’s nanquan gold went to Diana Bong Siong Lin of Malaysia with  9.70 points.
