Tierro fires off PH Davis bid
John Patrick Tierro will open the Philippines’ Davis Cup campaign against Sri Lanka’s top player Harshana Godamanna today in the first round of Asia-Oceania Group 2 tie in Colombo.
Tierro, back from the Davis Cup team after years of absence, is expected to impose his power against Godamanna in the opening singles. PH top man Ruben Gonzales plays the second singles against Thangarajah Dineshkanthan.
Treat Huey, the world No. 22 doubles player and a recent Australian Open quarterfinalist, and Johnny Arcilla will see action tomorrow against Godamanna and Rajeev Rajapakse in the pivotal doubles match.
Godamanna battles Gonzales and Dineshkanthan takes on Tierro in the reverse singles Sunday.
“The condition here is very windy and it’s on hard courts which could suit PJ, that’s why our captain (Roland Kraut) picked him,” said PH Davis Cup administrator Randy Villanueva.
