MANILA, Philippines — Nikko Huelgas and John Chicano will lead over a hundred racers vying for the crown in various events in the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon next month.

The two-day race starting on April 26 will feature five events, including the Asia Cup 2014 Series, at Subic Bay Freeport.

“Definitely some of the national athletes of other countries competing in the Asian Games will be there,” said Ramon Marchan, the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (Trap) secretary-general, who’s also the head of the local organizing committee.

Huelgas and Chicano, the country’s top triathletes, along with Kim Mangrobang head the Philippine bets in the 1.5K swim-40K bike-10K run of the Asia Cup 2014 Series, where elite athletes can vie for ITU points for their Asian and world rankings.

The race will also serve as a National Age-Group Championship, where the top finishers can get an endorsement from Trap to compete in the 2014 World AG Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

Other events are the Inter-Club competition, the Asian Para-Triathlon Championships and the national tryouts, where some of the promising performers may be invited to the national pool of the junior, under-23 or elite division.

“It’s going to be more exciting since the triathlon community has grown,” said Marchan during the press conference yesterday at Blackbeard’s Seafood Island in Mall of Asia.

Aside from the standard distance, the event will stage a 750m swim-20K bike-5K run sprint and a 400m-12K bike-3K run mini sprint.
