Mayweather wins title with controversial KO

VICTORIOUS FLOYD. Floyd Mayweather Jr. celebrates after defeating Victor Ortiz by 4th round knockout during their WBC welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 17, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. AFP

LAS VEGAS – (UPDATE)Floyd Mayweather dethroned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz with a controversial blind-side punch in the fourth round of their eventful title fight on Saturday in Las Vegas.

The unbeaten Mayweather knocked out Ortiz at 2:59 of the fourth as he appeared to hit the champion during a break in the fight with a left-right combination while Ortiz had his hands down.

The referee had stopped the fight in mid-round just seconds earlier to deduct a point from Ortiz for head-butting Mayweather in the corner during a vicious exchange of punches.

Ortiz had just finished apologizing twice to Mayweather for the head butt and was looking to the referee for guidance when Mayweather surprised him with a sucker punch.

The MGM Hotel and Casino crowd booed the decision by the referee to give the victory to Mayweather, who had been winning the 147-pound fight by a slim margin through the first three rounds.

The 34-year-old Mayweather is now 42-0 with 26 knockouts and looked impressive early despite taking 16 months off since his last fight.

Ortiz, who came into the fight 14 pounds heavier than Mayweather, was coming off an impressive victory over Andre Berto for the title.

In the fourth round, the two fighters were locked in a corner exchanging blows when the Ortiz thrust his head up and forward to hit Mayweather, who had his back to the ropes.

Mayweather, who was not cut, immediately complained to the referee, who stopped the fight to deduct a point from Ortiz. Ortiz immediately apologized to Mayweather.

The fighters then moved to the center of the ring and Ortiz put his arms around Mayweather and apologized a second time. Ortiz dropped his hands and stepped back as Mayweather caught him unaware with a quick left that stunned Ortiz before knocking him down with a straight right hand while the referee was looking the other way.

Ortiz had been fighting well up to that point, showing he was more than just Mayweather’s tuneup for a possible fight with Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao next year.

The 24-year-old Ortiz was fighting for the second time as a true welterweight as his record fell to 29-3-2 with 22 knockouts.

Here is what happened to some of Pacquiao’s last seven opponents:

Antonio Margarito, pummeled repeatedly, broken orbital bone, sent to hospital. Miguel Cotto, pummeled repeatedly, TKO, sent to hospital. Ricky Hatton, knocked out cold, sent to hospital, hasn’t fought since. Oscar De La Hoya, pummeled repeatedly, TKO’d, hasn’t fought since. David Diaz, pummeled repeatedly, TKO’d, sent to hospital.

The other two (Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley) essentially refused to fight, covered up for 12 rounds and accepted lopsided losses by decision.

Pacquiao doesn’t just defeat opponents; he punishes them right into an ambulance. Mayweather, attempting to spin the argument, notes that he beat most of those guys before Pacquiao and claims he “softened them up.”

Perhaps. It’s also possible Mayweather sees the destruction Pacquiao can do to a man’s health, reputation and career, and wouldn’t mind avoiding him completely.

    Only Floyd knows for sure.

Besides rigged ala WWE style, i think Mayweather is preparing to make a music video with 50 cent with the song “You got SUCKED SUCKA!!”.

Latest NEWS from JOKE JOKE JOKE Network:
Of the guaranteed US$ 25 million for Mayweather: Ortiz got US$ 10 million, Cortez got another US$ 10 million, and the rest of the US$ 5 million to Roger Mayweather (Floyd Jr.’s Trainer and Uncle).  Floyd gets the PPV profits!

As for Floyd Jr. he is banking on that match with Manny Pacquiao wherein he is guaranteed double than what he got in this WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION sanctioned bout.

    JOKE JOKE JOKE Network

Seriously – MAYWEATHER IS A BIG JOKE, not only to the SPORT of BOXING but to SPORTSMANSHIP itself.

Contrast what Alvarez did when Gomez (in one of the undercards) turned his back on Alvarez; Gomez knew he made a mistake and immediately defended himself by holding his gloves up, but Alvarez did not take advantage of that momentary lapse from Gomez, no he did not – he allowed Gomez a few more seconds to recover – THAT’S PROFESSIONALISM – THAT’S SPORTSMANSHIP – THAT’S BEING A GENTLEMAN EVEN IN A BRUTAL SPORT OF BOXING!!!

My opinion the fight is scripted, it’s not boxing, it’s wrestling.

    1.  Referee is not looking.

    2.  The knock-down of Ortiz is more of a drama because after the first punch, no defensive stance from his side, he just let to take second punch.

    3.  The head-butt is just the indication to start the biggest boxing theater show in history.

    4.  During the interview of Ortiz, he seem to be happy, no frustration and did not protested.

    5.  Also for Mayweather, he believe that the fight is too obvious (like a fixed fight) or unfairly decided, that why he got frustrated.

Mayweather is NOT ENTITLED to fight the true pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao.

pretty much agreed to how you viewed the fight except for the #2. the fight was definitely fixed! jr bank rolled the entire event including Ortiz’s pay check..all those for high back-end profit. The fight was WWF style PPV boxing.  jr guaranteeing the KO victory, just confirmed that the fight was already over even before it started.
