We must heed Mon Tulfo’s urgent call

/ 01:41 AM February 19, 2015

With the (allegedly) venerable Bob Arum still there, forget about the Super Fight for now. There’s a more urgent call we must all try to heed, now!

It’s like this. In his column on Tuesday, my old buddy, the no-nonsense columnist and social critic Mon Tulfo, confided that his daughter has been a victim of prohibited drugs.

He wrote: “Parents who have children studying at the College of St. Benilde, pay attention. Prohibited drugs are sold by some CSB students on and off the campus. I learned this from my daughter, a student of the school, and (from) some of her classmates.”

Mon reported that when his daugther came home a few nights ago, her eyes were drooping. Upon questioning, she admitted (to her mother) that she had taken Valium, a depressant supplied by a fellow student. A room search later yielded a sachet of marijuana. The poor girl said she bought it from one of the coffee shops around the school.

Mon had tried to contact school authorities, but they all refused to discuss or do something about his disturbing discovery. He, however, was able to confirm that the drug pushers were scions of rich or influential families.

It could not be determined if they were a syndicate. But knowing Mon, he had agreed to be embarrassed, while exposing his daughter to reprisal, to hopefully open the eyes of our President Noynoy Aquino—who often makes decisions like an aimless narco-slave—to the horror and terror caused by prohibited drugs.

We must do something in our respective communities to save the youth from the rampaging drug menace. This also serves as a call on Mon Tulfo to lead a campaign, involving parents, to rouse the Palace, the police, barangay heads and all other authorities, to honestly wage a war against the national drug menace—because it’s already very late!

(ALERT: One locality which would be hard to penetrate by drug pushers is San Nicolas, Pangasinan. It’s a scenic agricultural town at the foot of the Caraballo Mountain with year-round programs for residents and their relatives both here and abroad. In fact, Celso Cruz Rodrigo, a retired airline executive now managing his own farm, has reported the following activities in San Nicolas: 1. Feb. 21-22, 2015. Red Arrow High School alumni grand reunion. 21 Feb—a motorcade around town followed by picnic and fellowship in the evening. Feb 22 is a gala night. This school produced several prominent people in government and private sectors. 2. Feb 27-March 2. Grand Inniliw. A gathering of San Nicolas people living around the world. Our association, San Nicolanians Worldwide Inc. – Philippine Chapter, of which I am the president, will host the affair. There will also be a motorcade, cultural presentations, salo-salo, gala night and picnic where exotic foods will be served. In addition, there will be a medical mission to serve our sick and needy townmates on March 3 and 4. 3. March 3-8. Celebration of the town fiesta. Merry making and selection of Mr and Ms Duras and Mrs. Sanicolas.)
