Petron’s Blaze Spikers PSL All-Filipino team to beat

For Petron coach George Pascua, having a talent-heavy team is a happy problem.

The renowned Far Eastern University mentor, who steered the Blaze Spikers to the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix title last year, will have the enviable job of shuffling, among others, top-caliber players Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Rachel Daquis and Aby Marano on his front line this year.

Petron will take on newcomer Philips Gold tomorrow in the PSL All-Filipino inaugurals at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

“They know their roles and they easily listen to instructions,” said Pascua of his three stars. “They are all former captains of their respective teams.”

To avoid a clash of egos, Pascua said he has named former Lady Tamaraw Maica Morada as Petron’s team skipper.

“She has it in her to be a leader,” said Pascua. “And Rachel (former FEU spiker herself) will be there to help.”

Pascua said they will rely on their talents and character to uphold Petron’s reputation as the “team to beat.”

“I feel a little pressure yes, but I’m confident with my deep bench.”

Petron will also unveil Filipino-American Alexa Micek, who will be converted to opposite hitter and defense instead of libero which was her position while playing for North California State.

Chemistry and teamwork, Pascua admitted, will be their main concern following the team’s major revamp.

He said they have to get used to playing with tall setters in 5-foot-7 Mary Grace Masangkay and 5-foot-8 Ivy Perez.

Petron will also rely on regulars Carmina Aganon, Mayette Zapanta and Fille Cainglet-Cayetano.
