No more Mr. Nice Guy, Roach tells Pacquiao

By

BAGUIO CITY—Bringing out the killer’s instinct used to be easy for Manny Pacquiao.

Once his opponent landed a solid blow and he was unable to retaliate, Pacquiao would get mad. He would bang his gloves, snort and move in ready for the kill.

Well, not anymore. Pacquiao seems to have mellowed with age and his esteemed position as congressman of Sarangani.

Fact is, he has mercifully allowed his last three opponents—Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley—to go the distance.

Coach Freddie Roach has seen Pacquiao’s transformation and against Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12,  he wants the pound-for-pound king to stop being Mr. Nice Guy.

“He (Pacquiao) is too nice. He is the nicest person around. I mean, how can you teach him not to be,” said Roach.

“I want to see a knockout. I’d really like to,” added Roach, who wants Pacquiao to finally shut Marquez up in their third fight for the World Boxing Organization welterweight crown slated at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Roach misses the Pacquiao of old. Wild, furious, relentless.

“He knocked out four of them with only one hand,” Roach said about the time he got Pacquiao into his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. Pacquiao at that time was a natural southpaw whose main weapon was his left cross.

“Now that he can fight with both hands, he can easily knock down (Juan Manuel) Marquez,” Roach said.

The problem of course is Mr. Nice Guy.

During his mitt training session here Wednesday, Pacquiao must have said, “I’m sorry” 20 times to Roach every time he hit him. This drew a laugh from the 51-year-old American trainer.

“He is too compassionate,” said Roach, noting that Pacquiao “carried” the bloodied Margarito through the last three rounds even if he could have finished him off.

It is Roach who is fuming about Marquez’s allegations that he was robbed during his first two fights with Pacquiao.

“I feel Manny won both fights,” Roach said. “We were the ones who were robbed.”

According to Roach, a Hall of Fame trainer, an early knockout by Pacquiao would put an exclamation point on the trilogy.

Roach said he hoped it would be the last fight of Pacquiao against Marquez, who escaped defeat in their first bout through a judge’s scoring error and then lost the second by split decision.

I really doubt it, but hope to be happily wrong, because Manny is just a nice, likeable fellow who’s forgotten what the words “mad” and “fired up” mean..
I’ll bet when he starts beating up Marquez he’s going to keep looking with those wide eyes to the ref, like: “stop the fight ! what’s the matter with you ? cancha see the guy’s hurting ?”.

“Boxing is not about killing each other”-words from the Hon. Cong. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao tha’s why in his last fights he let off the hook the likes of Margarito & Mosley. But for JMM this may drastically change because of the disrespect accorded to him by “dynamita” claiming that he was robbed despite kissing the canvas 4x in their 2 fights. The early training is an indication that the Pacman is aiming for an emphatic win not needing the judges’ decision! So Floyd, be ready “You’re next”!!!!!!

“Boxing is not about killing each other”-Congressman Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. For this words i admire him so much not only as a boxer but a person as well. But maybe in the 3rd fight with Marquez this will change a bit because of the disrespect he has accorded the Pacman. The early self-imposed training is an indicator that the Pacman has something cooking in his mind right now. Though he don’t wish to kill Marquez, the urge to have an emphatic win not needing the judges’ decisions is in the air! He is nice to those who respect him but the opposite when it comes to loud-mouthed opponents like Hatton & Marquez! And yes!!!!!!!!!!!! especially with the self-proclaimed greatest in boxing, FMJ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Considering the lack of “consciousness” of the referees in big fights , Manny cannot afford to trust the referee. He must score a convincing win against JMM. Yes a knockout will put a an exclamation point to this trilogy. And there is FMJ who just might come out of his terrified shell and go for it. What a fight it will be.

At last I heard someone say it’s Pacquiao who was robbed of the first fight with Marquez. And it’s because of the stupidity of a judge.

Most trainers do not want to say the real problem with wealthy boxers…it is simply money and wealth! Boxers have to train very hard and this includes certain diet and food restrictions…After so many years of victories and so much wealth, the boxers grow tired of it all.  This happened to Oscar De la Hoya and even Mike Tyson in his early years. This same thing has happened to Floyd Merryweather also…NO more eye of the tiger!

May respeto ako kay Marquez, pero please Pacman, patumbahin na ‘yan Round 1 tapos dumuro ka sa camera sa post-game interview. Paki sabi “Hey Floyd, you’re next!”

Hatton was lucky to survived in round 1 but i was surprised the fight to be that so easy. On Nov. it will be different. Pac by 1st round KO win. I won’t be surprised.

Hatton got it in 2. he was lucky to survived the 1st round. Pacman by 1st round KO is no surprise this time.
