Ginebra nips Globalport behind late-game efforts from Caguioa, Aguilar

Mark Caguioa made the game-winning basket and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel scraped past Globalport, 111-108, in overtime in the 2015 PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday night at Mall of Asia Arena.
Caguioa did not play in the fourth quarter but was fielded back in the final minute of the extra period and came up with the go-ahead shot from close range that gave the Kings the lead for good, 109-108, with 12.3 seconds left.

Japeth Aguilar, who has been flourishing under new head coach Frankie Lim, sealed Ginebra’s third victory with a block on Keith Jensen’s 3-pointer and two free throws inside the final 10 seconds.
“It’s all about effort,” said Lim. “I told them we can’t be soft against them or else they’l eat us alive and they responded.”
“Mark started slow. But at the endgame with one of those last plays we opted to go to Mark and Mark simply delivered,” Lim said of his veteran guard Caguioa, who finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Import Orlando Johnson led the Kings with 34 points and 13 rebounds while Aguilar added 18 points and 13 rebounds. It was a crucial victory for Ginebra, which would’ve slid to 11th place in the standings had it lost but instead, jumped to eighth with a 3-4 record. “Big win for us. I felt that if we lost, we would really sink because with two wins and five losses it would be really hard for us to get back up. But now we’re given a new lease of life.” Omar Krayem posed a major scare on the Kings. Krayem, the Batang Pier import from Palestine, forced the game into overtime on a deep triple over LA Tenorio with 4.5 seconds remaining and nearly won it for his team, 108-107, in OT after burying another one from the same spot with 24.7 ticks to go. Globalport’s other import Jarrid Famous notched career-highs with 39 points and 28 rebounds but was held scoreless in extra session. The Batang Pier squandered a golden chance to bolster their bid for a spot in the top four.
