I was suicidal after Pacquiao defeat, says Hatton

LONDON—Britain’s former world welterweight champion Ricky Hatton admitted on Thursday that his brutal defeat at the hands of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao drove him to the brink of suicide.

Hatton, who retired in July, was demolished inside just two rounds by Pacquiao in Las Vegas in May 2009, a fierce battering which caused his life to spiral out of control in a battle with drink and drugs.

“I was so down, I was crying and breaking out and contemplating suicide,” Hatton told the BBC.

“I was going deeper and deeper into depression. I was going out and having a few drinks. The worst thing you can do with depression is add alcohol to it.

“I needed something to get my backside into gear and pull my finger out. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to think, ‘Blimey Ricky, get a grip’.

“Depression is a serious thing and, after my defeat to Manny Pacquiao, I contemplated retirement and didn’t cope with it very well.”

Hatton’s predicament worsened when he fell victim to a newspaper sting in which he was shown taking cocaine before he went into rehabilitation.

“For someone in my position taking drugs once is nothing short of disgraceful,” said the 32-year-old.

“The reason behind my actions and the way I was behaving wasn’t a drink or drugs thing, it was depression. I was so down, I was crying and breaking out and contemplating suicide.

“Half the things I was doing I didn’t even read about in the paper. I can’t even remember the night it happened – that’s what depression does to you.

“I was having blackouts, days on end whether I was drinking or not when I couldn’t remember what had happened in my life.

“I thank the News of the World because who knows where it could have ended up.”

I just hope and pray that should the Pacquiao-Mayweather dream fight materializes and the latter suffers the same fate as Hatton’s, first time in Mayweather’s storied career if ever, he will not follow the same route as the Hitman’s. Can’t help thinking really that the fight will not materialize at all. Look how deathly scared Mayweather of Pacman is. He is the only boxer in history that I know of who wants to change the usual rules of boxing to avoid mixing it up with the great Manny Pacquiao. Enough said, nobody just can’t  convince Money to fight him, not even all the money in the world, though he needs it right now because of his six pending cases in court. I  think we, boxing fans,  should stop pressuring & torturing Mayweather and let him be. Pity that he could never honestly consider himself as the greatest boxer of this era as long as he does not proves his mettle with  the  great Pacman. Aren’t we all Pinoys just so lucky and glad  that a great boxer was born during our lifetime? That thought alone makes me so proud to be Pinoy, never mind that  GMA and her cohorts were likewise born in this era. We just cannot have it all….

Pacquiao doesn’t just crush opponent’s body, he inflicts mentally as well — look at Floyd, he’s mentally retarded already. :)

This is what gayweather is trying to avoid. At least hatton was brave enough to face manny.

talking about your defeat, is healthy

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MAKOIXGGLIHZACY2BZGFYHIYTE dario

@w4d:disqus the “mental damage”, manny has nothing to do with it. every person has his own way of dealing with defeat. it just so happened that hatton had no way at all, and thats what disgraceful.  manny’s win, and hatton’s defeat, are just events facilitated things.  others could have acted differently, manny or not may be the cause of their defeat.

    The agony of defeat..sometimes it is barbaric but someone has to win. “anyone who thinks he stands must take heed,lest he falls”..When you are on the top,theres no way to go but down,beware Paquiao…vanity..all is vanity..;

Wow…Pacquiao not only inflicts physical damage but mentally, as well…

Rick if you can read this, boxing is two things, winning and losing. I put some money into you on your fight with Pacquiao, I lost. It happens man.

Thank God you’re in good health and you have your family and fans. We have some other boxers (from the Philippines) who lost, had brain damage, and living in the dumps. No support from the government and all. Still they are surviving.

True victory comes from coping up with defeat.
