Canoe bets claim 2 bronze medals

SINGAPORE—Canoeing landed two bronze medals for the Philippines through teenagers Hermie Macaranas and Ojay Fuentes in men’s solo and tandem 1000m events Saturday in the Southeast Asian Games here.

Racing in the waters of  the Marina channel, the 19-year-old Macaranas spent the rest of the way trying to catch up with eventual gold winner Marjuki Marjuki of Indonesia and OO Thant Zin of Burma (Myanmar) in the men’s solo

Marjuki clocked four minutes, 2.349 seconds to win the race, while Zin finished in 4:06.707. Macaranas, in his second SEA Games stint, settled for third in 4:08.294.

Macaranas later teamed up with 16-year-old Fuentes to snag the bronze in the tandem event, registering a time of 3:58.377 behind gold winner Htik Win and Wai Sari Min of Burma (3:43.814) and Yunus Muhamad and Tarras Anwar of Indonesia (3:44.950)

Twenty-eight-year-old veteran Marvin Amposta finished fourth  in the men’s solo kayak 1,000m. He finished almost 10 seconds behind Singapore’s Teo Gyang Yi Lucas, who captured the  gold in 3:43.036.

Macaranas and Fuentes vowed to come back strong in the 200m distances on Tuesday.
