Huey, Lipsky hurdle Wimby doubles opener

Filipino doubles specialist Treat Huey and his American partner Scott Lipsky hurdled their opening-round foes in the men’s doubles of the Wimbledon Wednesday.

The US-based Huey and Lipsky trounced Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay and David Marrero of Spain, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-4, in the match which lasted just one hour and 29 minutes.

Huey, who has slipped in the world rankings from a high of 20 last year to 65, and the 37th-ranked Lipsky finished with five aces against three from their opponents and won three of five break  opportunities.

Huey and Lipsky, the reigning Estoril ATP champions, also displayed sharpness with their service games, converting 82 percent of their first serves, and 69 percent of their second serves.

In contrast, Cuevas (ranked 31st) and Marrero (21st) won just 76 percent of their first serves and 37 percent of their second serves. Huey and Lipsky also had more winners, 9-6.

They will next face Jonathan Erlich of Israel and Philipp Petzshner of Germany who advanced with a 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Italy’s Andreas Seppi.

Huey’s best Wimbledon finish was reaching the third round in 2013 with Dominic Inglot of Great Britain.  Marc Anthony Reyes
