Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has become a father for the third time after his wife Coleen gave birth to the couple’s third child, Kit Joseph Rooney, the footballer announced on Sunday.

Rooney, 30, announced the arrival of Kit by telling his Twitter followers: “Our gorgeous little boy arrived today. Kit Joseph Rooney. 8lb 1oz (3.6kg). We are over the moon.”

The Rooneys, who were married in Italy in 2008, already have two sons in six-year-old Kai and Klay, 2.

It is understood that Coleen, 29, gave birth at Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Saturday as Wayne captained United to a 1-0 loss to Southampton at Old Trafford.

The couple, who were childhood sweethearts in their native Liverpool, had announced on Twitter in July that Coleen was expecting again.

In a previous interview, Coleen told celebrity OK! Magazine they would “definitely not” find out the sex of their baby.

But she said she would “love a girl because it would complete the family”.
