PSL: Cortez paces Generika in win over Standard Insurance-Navy

Chloe Cortez led a balanced attack and Generika scored a hard-earned win over Standard Insurance-Navy, 28-26, 26-28, 25-20, 25-19, in the 2016 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Cortez tallied a game-high 17 points as she anchored the Lifesavers’ defense with five blocks.
Shaya Adorador added 14, Geneveve Casugod had 13 while Wensh Tiu and Ria Meneses chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
“Ang challenge diyan kung paano mo sila bubuohin kasi galing sa iba-ibang mentors sila,” Generika coach Francis Vicente said of the composition of his team which is made up of stars from different universities.
Cortez and Meneses play for University of Santo Tomas, Adorador stars for University of the East under Vicente, and it’s not too long ago when Tiu suited up for La Salle.
Vicente’s question was answered, at least with the way his team showed up and delivered in its debut.
Adorador had seven aces, pouncing on Navy’s poor floor defense which gave up 17 points overall from the service line.
“Sanay na ako diyan. Alam ko na gagawin ko. Expect all players have different philosophies in life on how they will follow the coach, how they will jell with one another,” said Vicente, who also drew 34 excellent sets from the veteran Rubie de Leon.
“Ang key lang naman diyan they have to be friendly with one another, know each other’s weak points and strong points. And as I always say, they have to complement each other.”
Pau Soriano registered 10 points while Lillet Mabbayad had nine for Standard Insurance, which also played its first game.
