San Beda’s Davon Potts dumps cloak of mystery in sterling debut

Davon Potts is no longer San Beda’s mystery man.
The Fil-Am swingman showed what he’s truly made of on Saturday, smoking Letran late as the Red Lions lit up their bitter rivals, 89-85.

“Everybody knows him now,” said San Beda coach Jamike Jarin. “In our team, everybody knows how he plays. He got it going, and good thing our guards found him and he made the good plays and took care of it. He made his shots and we’re happy.”
Potts lit up in the clutch, firing nine of his 16 points in the fourth period to fend off the pesky Knights.
But for the 23-year-old slasher from Los Angeles, he’s just glad to be a part of the winning culture in Mendiola.
“I’ve constantly told my teammates that I am just a piece of the puzzle. Everything that I do is contributing to the team’s success and the veterans have all taught me to just fit that mold to this team,” he said. “San Beda has had a great winning culture and I just want to be a part of it.”
Potts, whose mother hails from Rosario, Cavite, also feels vindicated as he finally gets a chance to help San Beda reclaim the basketball title this season after leaving the confines of Cal State Los Angeles back in the United States.
“I made the decision to come here to take the challenge. I trust my coach since day one. Me coming here is a big challenge for me and my teammates and I just want to be part of the team’s chemistry,” he said.
“Since day one, my teammates have pushed me, taught me of the physicality of the game here in the Philippines, and I’m just very excited. I love my teammates the same. I may not express it as much, but I love them the same. I’m just pretty excited to be part of the team.” IDL
