Sheriff eligible to play out final year for UST

University of Santo Tomas gets a shot in the arm as fifth year guard Jamil Sheriff has been cleared to play for UAAP Season 79.
Head coach Boy Sablan confirmed the development as the Growling Tigers got an approval from the eligibility committee on the Fil-Canadian’s status on Saturday.

“Like what I said in our huddle, miracles happen everyday,” he told INQUIRER.net in an exclusive phone call. “Answered prayer ito sa amin. God is good all the time.”
Another source explained that UST contested Sheriff’s status, arguing that he should be covered by the new rule where players are deemed ineligible if they turn 25 past July 31. The old rule puts the cut off at June 30.
Sheriff turned 25 years old last July 21.
The 5-foot-7 Sheriff has proven to be a steady playmaker and a stingy defender, averaging 3.22 points, 3.24 rebounds and 2.15 assists for UST in its runner-up finish last season.

Sablan is in dire need of veteran presence for the Growling Tigers, with only Louie Vigil and Kent Lao the other seniors who are suiting up this season.
UST opens its season against Ateneo on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
