Myla Pablo, open spiker with sledgehammer kills, closed a watershed deal for Philippine volleyball when she inked a P4.6-million contract with Pocari Sweat.

The contract binds the 6-foot former National University stalwart for five years with the Lady Warriors who won the Open and Reinforced Conferences of the Shakey’s V-League (SVL) this year.

It was the first time a semi-pro Filipino spiker signed a playing contract which could trigger similar arrangement in the thriving women’s volleyball scene.

Sources privy to the deal didn’t say how much the 22-year-old Pablo, who also got a brand-new Hyundai Accent as signing bonus, is getting on her first year.

Such playing contracts existed in Philippine Superliga but they were uniformly one-year contracts.

By contrast SVL superstar Alyssa Valdez reportedly got P100,000 a month from Bureau of Customs.

In PSL, Rachel Anne Daquis and Jaja Santiago reportedly got P80,000 a month from RC Cola and Foton, respectively.
