Romeo downplays GlobalPort’s 2-0 start

With GlobalPort winning its first two games convincingly, Terrence Romeo doesn’t want his team to feel overconfident early in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup.
“We have to forget that we’re 2-0,” Romeo said after the Batang Pier’s 91-84 win over Star on Friday.
Romeo has undoubtedly taken the leadership role for his crew, much to the delight of coach Franz Pumaren, who has been motivating the lights out scorer to develop other facets of his game.
“I knew I needed to grow. It’s a learning process for me, but I believe I will eventually get there and I’m thankful that coach Franz is there to guide me,” he said.
And it’s not just showing on the team’s record, but on Romeo’s numbers as well.
Through the first two weeks, he has been the top scorer and playmaker averaging 23.5 points and 7 assists.
Romeo’s dimes may have caught the rest of the league by surprise, but so far, he’s getting the hang of being a distributor for his teammates.
“I’m still looking to score, but it’s a better feeling that I’m helping my teammates score. It’s also a credit to them because when I pass, they get easier shots and the load is being lessened for me,” he said.
“We can execute better and we have a better flow. I’m thankful because somehow, I attract the defense which gets them better shots.”
But Romeo is far from perfect as he turns the ball over more often than he wanted to averaging 4.5 turnovers per game and he’s willing to work on cutting down his errors.
“I just give my best. Whatever I can do to help the team, I’ll do it.”
Romeo is hopeful that the positives will overshadow the negatives as GlobalPort prepares for Alaska on Wednesday.
“Alaska is a championship caliber team, so we can’t relax. We need to scout, prepare, and trust our coaches with our game plan,” he said. “Whatever coach Franz wants us to do on the court, we’ll just give our best.”
