Espinas happy to fulfill role for loaded Beermen

Knowing how potent San Miguel is, Gabby Espinas admits that bench players like him could sit the game out and leave the bulk of the responsibility to the starters.
“Coach doesn’t need to play us for us to win because same as what the people say, you know how strong this team is,” he said.
But the veteran forward knows that the strength of the Beermen comes from the energy of the bench players and it’s up to them to step up and give the necessary boost to aid their first five.
“We just want to step up for the team. Anyone here can make it to other teams’ lineups, but we’re professionals here and we’re stepping up whenever our import or June Mar (Fajardo) gets in foul trouble,” he said.
Espinas’ words came to reality on Saturday when San Miguel played Rain or Shine as Charles Rhodes found himself saddled on the bench after picking up four fouls midway through the second quarter.
That allowed him and Arwind Santos to take charge as they ignited the Beermen’s first half pullaway and set the tone for the 111-98 victory.
Espinas finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the win.
But for the former NCAA Most Valuable Player, it’s just a matter the fellow reserves doing little contributions to help San Miguel keep its spot on the top.
“For me, the points are just a bonus. We’re just working hard and we protect what we currently have,” he said, as the Beermen go to the All-Star break at solo first with their immaculate 5-0 record.
“This win is important for us because at least, we’ve already laid our foundation with this 5-0 record.”
