Roach: Marquez has Pacquiao’s number

Hall of Fame trainer accepts part of blame

By

Freddie Roach takes the blame.

Pacquiao's long time trainer Freddie Roach takes part of the blame.

LAS VEGAS—Freddie Roach shouldered part of the blame Saturday night for what has been generally described as a controversial victory by Manny Pacquiao over Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

And as he prepares for a road trip back to Wild Card Gym Sunday, he will have plenty of time to contemplate on what went wrong as he hits the drawing board anew, aware that the paths of these two warriors could cross again early next year.

“Marquez has Manny’s number,” Roach said. “I have to prepare him better next time.”

Roach did not delve into too much X-and-Os but he did say he would probably have Pacquiao moving to the right more than he did Saturday in his defense of the WBO welterweight title.

The eight-division champion admitted he struggled against Marquez, looking overly cautious of his opponent’s reputation for accurate counters, but said he did enough to win.

“It’s hard to fight Marquez because he always waits for me to create the action,” said Pacquiao. “He’s a good counterpuncher.”

Roach pointed to other factors that contributed to the less-than-smashing victory. He said Pacquiao started suffering cramps in the middle of the fight and the fighter admitted he could not find his balance on his punches.

The two clashed heads accidentally several times, including in the 10th when a cut opened above Pacquiao’s right eye. Pacquiao needed 28 stitches to sew up the cut, coming to the press conference late because of the procedure.

According to Top Rank, Pacquiao was stitched in three layers—eight at the deepest portion of the cut, eight more in the middle and 12 to close the cut at the surface.

“I got headbutted a lot,” Pacquiao said. “His headbutts really hurt me.”

But Roach said it was no excuse and none of those factors could erode the fact that was apparent even to the Pacquiao corner.

“Marquez fought a great fight. The fight was his for the taking but he did not grab it,” Roach said, referring to the final two rounds that the five-time trainer of the year said Pacquiao won to escape with the majority decision.

“He deserves a rematch,” added Roach.

Roach, however, defended the fight’s judges.

“I’m no judge but I do think my guy pulled it out,” he said. “They have the best seats in the house and I was not surprised with the decision.

Roach also felt that Marquez wasn’t really tested by Pacquiao’s power during the match.

Even with more power punches landed, Pacquiao really did not wobble Marquez—uncanny for someone who had previously knocked the Mexican down four times in two past bouts.

“Manny hit him with good shots, but nothing great,” said Roach. “He shook him a little but Marquez was resilient and came back every time.”

I disagree on the premise that Marquez has Pacquiao’s number. It is not Manny’s number that Marquez has but it is Manny’s foot that Marquez took.

yes its nice to have a rematch again

“28 stitches”! wow, that’s worse than in a car accident where your head hits the windshield! I know. it happened to me. LOL
“cramps”? OK so that explains why Pacman did not do his usual in-out, angles, aggressive attacks. But why would he cramp up? Was it dehydration, fatigue, lack of potassium, an old injury or aging?  He has a physiotherapist so I wonder why he would be having these problems.
I notice also he looked tense. That could also cause the cramping. Was it cuz his rumored fight with Jinky?

    • Nikki Sacramento

You’re right, Manny looked tense. He got tense because he found out that Jinxky is having an affair with Alex Ariza, Manny’s strength and conditioning coach. We saw Jinxky here in Las Vegas with Alex Ariza. Kerengkeng din si Jinxky. Dati yung D.I. nya ang nakalaguyo nya.

      • Nikki Sacramento

Are you gay? Why do you have to attack me personally when I am a personal witnessed to what happened? Are you envious that you are not here and witnessed it? Sorry, I won’t stoop down to your level. Baka nga hindi ka pa nakasakay ng eroplano. Poor boy!

      • Nikki Sacramento

Mabango ako at maganda, kaya sorry ka na lang. Ikaw wala ka ngang mukha siguro pangit ka, bakla ka pa.

what makes you think I am even interested in that? I hate chismis and feel sad for people who love making chismis about other people. Me, I love sports, basta its world championships. I love to talk about professional people who are the best at what they do, not make chismis about them.

      • Nikki Sacramento

Well, you’re denying you’re not interested to that and yet you’re reading it. Don’t be a hypocrite. So don’t ever tell me you never got involved in a chismis? Mine is not a chismis. We saw them here in Vegas and we were so shocked to see them holding hands. Certainly that’s not of our business, but we saw them together. Anyways, everybody knows about Jinky and her DI before, which angered Manny. It’s her exposure to so much socialization and bad company that made her tempted to be involved with her DI.

Uh, this is the sports section. I think you wanna be in the entertainment section. Holding hands? Just because they are holding hands in public means they are having an affair?? Were you raised in a convent or maybe your father is ultra-protective? Having a Di is standard fyi for a lot of rich women here in Makati. It’s their form of exercise and socializing. Many rich wives from Forbes do it. My Titas are like that. It’s not a secret or is it considered cheating because their husbands approve of it. It doesn’t mean they are having an affair. Besides, that’s none of your or my business. I can’t understand why there are still women like you who still live in the past under a man’s rule. I support women’s lib and think they are men’s equal. I am not a male chauvinist or insecure with my masculinity unlike some ignorant men. Jinkee and Manny have a house in Forbes already and they know, the old conservative ways are gone. We live in a modern world where it’s ok to be yourself and not have to worry about what others think. Stop being silly.

I want to hear that news about ariza and jinky and the DI. Please give more details. freedom of exppression….hehehehh

manood na lang kayo ng UFC. walang fixing doon.
Many went there to loose the fight but the judges frustrated him. He is not happy.

Manny ought to dispute the doubt in the minds of the people, even us Filipinos. It was not a convincing win that we expected from him since he kept telling that he will knock Marquez down. Manny looked distracted and it seems the instruction of Roach didn’t sink into his mind. Of course, the Epal Buboy Fernandez was trying to give instruction too by sticking his face close to you so that when the camera pans, he will be seen.Next time, I suggest that Manny listen only to Roach, because too many cooks spoiled the broth. And it almost spoiled out brought. Another fight will be a good idea. But Marquez is also a good fighter and he earned the respect of Manny. Knock him out Manny next time.By the way, don’t bring along Jinky in the fight —- she’s a JINX. Your lucky charm is Nanay Dionisia whose pure her and simplicity still there despite your success and popularity! Nanay Dionisia prays that you win and will not be hurt, while Jinxky pray that you win so she will have a lot of money. Look at her, she just displayed her new disgusting look, modeling for Belo.

I disagree with you except about the part of not bringing his family along to his fights.  Manny has won so many big fights with the same corner people. I don’t see any reason why he should change.  I think Roach was right, Manny should move to the right some more. He wasn’t as aggressive as he was in previous fights. Maybe it was his “cramps”. For having a “bad day” at the office, Manny can still win $30M. That’s not so bad at all

      • http://pinoy-politics.blogspot.com Monsi Serrano

I respect your view fellow taxpayer, however, you will notice during this particular fight, Buboy was trying to upstage Roach by giving instruction — in a way that’s distasteful, sticking his face closer to Manny. Roach is the key to Manny’s champs and success. Others are just icing on the cake — mga sampid na gustong makinabang sa biyaya kaya nakatunganga. Did you ever see Roach in his entire coaching and training stuck his face to Manny when giving instruction? Never. Maybe, some of the Team Pacquiao’s sampid are related to you. They’re parasites. Mind you, some of them even bet against Pacman when he fought Oscar Dela Hoya. Good thing they loss, and good thing Manny won the fight. But Manny is a very kind-hearted man. Despite he knew what happened, he let these parasites stay with him because if they’re fired, sa kangkungan sila pupulutin!

      • Anonymous

Well I’m only talking about his corner team, not the growing volume of his groupies, ok?  Manny may be kind-hearted but you don’t get to be in his shoes without knowing what you are doing.  Top athletes like Manny know how to surround themselves with the people that will help him win.  Boxing may look like an individual sport but I think, to be champion and stay champion, you should know how to build a strong team around you. I see it in many other sports like golf, tennis and racing (Schumi and Brawn for example).  Roach is very open and articulate and I’m sure he would say something if he didn’t like it.  I know Buboy is an integral part of Manny’s corner.  Roach cannot speak Manny’s native language.  Ibang klase si Buboy. The way I see it, Roach and Alex are the technical and engineering part of Team Pacquiao but Buboy is the “family” or social part. Sure it looks weird when a fat guy like Buboy gives boxing advice to Manny, no? But I think Manny just uses him like you would use your brother or close alalay in making sure you were well taken care of.  I mean, Roach is the real professional but Buboy is the guy who Manny really feels comfortable with. I dunno, until he starts losing, you can’t say Buboy is a liability cuz he has been there since Day 1.

      • http://pinoy-politics.blogspot.com Monsi Serrano

I am not saying Buboy is a liability. You’re putting words in my mouth. Show your ITR first PHTaxpayer. Hehehe. Anyway, it looks like you know very well this fellas huh? Are you an apologist of Buboy? Roach maybe articulate but he is not the type of person that will say something in public if he doesn’t like. I know him and spoke to him several times in Baguio and even in the States. The thing is, you only want to see what’s convenient with you. Maraming “epal” sa Team Pacquiao and unfortunately, Buboy was one of them.

      • Anonymous

whatever. siguro you were turned down by Team Pacquiao as a groupie, no? that’s why you are sour graping. LOL

      • Anonymous

Kahit ano sabihin ninyo panalo talaga si Pacquiao yan ang hatol ng mga judges. Hindi naman kayo judges importante panalo. Iba yun nanalo ka kaysa talo. Ang talo hindi nakakatulog agad samantalang ang panalo tulog agad sarap pa naghihilig pa. he he he he

      • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/PPRM73RLF5U46E75MXU26UGJUA Ako

@Monsi: I DID notice that Buboy was too much in Manny’s face, when he did that Roach would back off.

  • http://philippineprisons.wordpress.com Ven J. Tesoro

The pacman is a very sensitive fighter.  He fights to win.  He fights to earn.  And then he fights to help.  The latter part came through as a matter of
repaying his faith.  With Marquez, and
his all too familiar refrain of earning for his kids, manny pacquaio is
    immediately floored already.  He no
longer would train his sight on winning, although it is instinctive for him to
do it; neither would he allow himself not to earn anything, although it follows
that for every appearance he would earn, but for all there is to show, it is
his wont in helping that goaded him to fight marquez not to push a good
decision, that is, demolishing marquez, because in doing so, manny would have
    injured marquez’ children.  Manny will
not do it.  Hence, the result of
Pacquiao-Marquez III.  I mean that is how
    Manny conducted it.

please don’t talk about P.E.D, Marquez is on U.E.D –Urinal Energy Drinks !!!
