Athletes from different sports are known to play to the crowd from time to time, but one bodybuilder paid the ultimate price after trying to show off for the audience.
Sifiso Lungelo Thabete passed away after suffering injuries from a botched backflip attempt during a body building tourney.
According to the New York Post, the South-Africa native tried to perform a back flip but failed to rotate enough mid-jump and landed on his head, breaking his neck in the process.
The harrowing accident was caught on film, showing the muscle-clad athlete hyping the crowd and encouraging spectators to cheer him on.
Instead of loud cheers, the arena fell into utter silence after Thabete failed and lay motionless on the canvas.
Several officials came to his aid and rushed him to the hospital, where he passed away due to head trauma.
Adding insult to injury, Thabete’s clip went viral and was mocked online, before the severity of his injury was announced to the public.
The South African bodybuilding magazine Muscle Evolution, meanwhile, extended its sympathies for the family of the deceased and said the bodybuilding community was “shocked and saddened” by his unfortunate passing. Khristian Ibarrola /ra
