Three Philippine bets make ITF main draw
MANILA, Philippines—Roxanne Mae Resma of Cagayan de Oro whacked American Samantha Um, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the main draw of the 2011 Phinma International Juniors Tennis Championship (ITF) Junior’s Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center Monday.
Resma, 14, banked on her solid backhand volleys against Um, who struggled due to the hot weather during the last day of the qualifying round.
Resma upset Russian Elizaveta Tregubova, 6-3, 6-3, during Sunday’s opener of the Philippine Tennis Association-backed event.
Other Filipinos who moved to the main draw were Fritz Verdad who ousted Arman Aymond of Singapore, 6-3, 7-5, and Joachim Samson who clipped fellow Filipino Dheo Talatayod, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3, in the boys’ singles event.
