MANILA, Philippines—Drenched in sweat, he rushed out of the pitch and took off his jersey before handing it to his idol seated at the VIP area.

Even David Beckham gets enthralled by the mere presence of Manny Pacquiao.

“I couldn’t wait to get off the field when I saw him (Pacquiao). I’m a huge fan,” shared Beckham, who kickstarted the LA Galaxy’s 6-1 win over the Philippine Azkals with his patented strike.

“He’s a talented man and good person. I saw him walking during the game, it was exciting,” added Beckham, whose game against the Philippines was believed to be his second to the last game as part of the Galaxy before going back to Europe.

The English football star awed the sellout crowd at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium with a curling strike that went up and over Azkals’ keeper Eduard Sacapano in the 20th minute.

Incidentally, both Beckham and Pacquiao have just come off stunning victories.

Beckham led the Galaxy to the Major League Soccer Cup title a little over a week after Pacquiao edged Marquez in their trilogy to retain his WBO welterweight crown last month.

In another grand gesture, Beckham went back to the post-game conference just to give a signed jersey to Phil Younghusband.

Asked whether he would like to return to Manila, Beckham answered: “We’d love to come back.”

Beckham and American star striker Landon Donovan, who were said to play only in the first half, logged more than 70 minutes.

The pound-for-pound king along with his wife, Jinkee, and kids arrived just minutes before the first half ended.

the best of the world will recognize us as equals once they know we can be the best, too. for Englishman Mr. Beckham, the tradition to give “the shirt off his back” is their tradition of respect. all of us Pinoys should work for that…

    UNBELIEVABLE!!!
    An international icon…being a fan of a pambansang kamao…
    IT’S INCREDIBLE…AWESOME…

I salute David Beckham for such very humbling and endearing gesture.

But, of course, I  doff my hat off  to Manny Pacquiao…his mere name captivates the peoples in the world of sports.

"I am also your big fans, you know, that's why I'm here…..I also want to be a soccer star, after my basketball and singing career, you know".

That means nothing. Manny is the best pound for pound boxer in the world so that’s to be expected. When  Beckam say’s he’s a great fan of Phil Younghusband  as a football player and not as an aspiring actor – well, that would really be something to celebrate.

quirinomayer, when you research on the solution to mankind’s problems then that would be reason to celebrate. these persons came here to play football and i think they play it well within the limits of their humanity and you play this superiority stuff, how well are you good at what you do? it would be good to observe you in your own working environment … are you good at what you do?

Just want to raise a mug of beer, no,a glass of champagne, AND if I may, a “TAGAY NG TUBA” to:
Sir David Beckham, THANK YOU VERY MUCH,  SIR!
Indeed, a true sportsman and a “knight” of the modern world. Hope you will see the Philippines, footballwise, in a different light, much like about our Spanish sports heritage in the beautiful game. You see, we are still mastering our “ABC’s in football terms. We already have an “A” in Paolino Alcantara, a Filipino–Spanish footballer and manager who played for Barcelona, and for Spain. Maybe, our youth and people will wholeheartedly learn our “B” from your stellar career, Sir? Filipino youth, Beckham is synonymous with football, and great as he is, he stayed true and faithful to the football game. Will greater power outside sports lure him to be serving two masters at the same time? We will see. He chooses to work with organization and personalities with integrity and heart, not just money and power…ring a bell?  No? He showed Pacmoneyed-the-politico, what a knight should be be doing. What Knight Beckham showed was also called courtesy and tact being in a fellow sportsman’s turf. That is why he is a knight because he recognizes loyalty and honor then have the courage in choosing to live the life of a real sportsman and hero of the game that made him who he is today to millions of fans and friends around the winking :) world.”However, if the presence of Beckham and his Galaxy teammates worked like a benediction, it should be not only on Philippine football but on local sports as a whole.”  Yes, certainly. But fool yourself not, after the smoke and fanfare is gone, it is all about football and therefore must in one way or another bring football awareness to the young and eager players of the game in the Philippines. The public and private sports’ follow up initiatives in the grassroots levels will be most interesting. More international exposure and friendly games would be great. From ISLA DE LOS PINTADOS, (It may just be a game but d@m#, we got to learn now and fast to avoid “nil as reputation” in the football world as our Asian neighbors are becoming far more superior than us though we started football in the Philippines (1907) much earlier than MOST of them.)Sir David Beckham, salamat for coming and showing the Filipinos HOW TO KICK SOME BALLS!
