Rondina, Pons win 2nd straight PSL beach volleyball title
Petron XCS’ partnership of Cherry Rondina and Bernadeth Pons captured its second straight championship after tripping Sta. Lucia Realty A, 21-8, 21-11 in the Philippine Superliga Challenge Cup Finals Sunday at Sands SM By the Bay.
Rondina and Pons went on a tear in the second set, coupled with DM Demontano and Jackie Estoquia’s errors, and established a 6-1 run for the 19-10 lead.
After Estoquia salvaged a point for Sta. Lucia, 19-11, Rondina put it away with a down-the-line kill for the championship point.
“We survived the heat, and we just hung on,” said Rondina in Filipino. “Of course I’d like to thank Bernadeth because our chemistry was still there.”
“We wanted to win and we also wanted to beat our opponents,” said Pons in Filipino.
In the men’s division Foton’s uncle-nephew tandem of Krris Roy Guzman and Lemuel Arbasto took the title at the expense of Sands SM By the Bay’s Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad, 21-15, 21-15.
