Brawl breaks out in Gilas-Australia game

A free-for-all broke out late in the third quarter of the Philippines’ duel against Australia in the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers Monday night at Philippine Arena.

The game was stopped at the 4:01 mark of the third quarter after a brawl erupted when Australia big man Daniel Kickert took out Gilas Pilipinas swingman Roger Pogoy with a shove.

The situation intensified when both benches cleared and it was hard to tell who hit who first. Officials are currently reviewing the video as of posting time.

Australia’s sharpshooter Christopher Goulding took the brunt during the unfortunate incident as several Gilas players like Allein Maliksi and Calvin Abueva  ganged up on him just outside the baseline.

During the lull, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas addressed the crowd at center court, urging the fans in attendance to settle down.

“We didn’t want to happen what happened. Please respect the game and make our visitors feel safe in the arena,” Panlilio said.

“We will continue the game that we all love. but to show the respect to Australia. Let’s just enjoy the game. Everybody calm down and let’s also respect the decision of the referees,” he added.

Gilas is down big, 79-48, with Australia firing from all cylinders.
