UAAP: La Salle, Ateneo batters surprise favored foes
MANILA, Philippines—La Salle stunned defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 4-3, in 10 innings Thursday to set off a rash of upsets that marked the start of the UAAP Season 74 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Carlos Muñoz sparkled on the mound, striking out 10 batters as the Archers posted the upset win after close to four hours of play.
Rookie-laden Ateneo also scored an 11-5 upset over Season 72 champion Adamson.
It was UST’s first loss in two seasons. The Tigers reigned supreme for the 23rd time last season, highlighting their campaign with a 10-game sweep.
De La Salle-Zobel bested Ateneo, 6-1, in the opening game of juniors baseball.
Over at the FilOil Flying V Arena, Ateneo outlasted Adamson, 22-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 15-11, and Far Eastern U blasted National U, 25-23, 25-27, 25-29, in women’s volleyball.
