Chot Reyes could be the next Smart Gilas coach

Chot Reyes: Next Smart Gilas coach? PBA IMAGE/ Nuki Sabio

MANILA, Philippines—With Serbian coach Rajko Toroman now out of the equation, the next Smart Gilas Pilipinas head coach will come from the pool of high-profile local mentors.

Sources said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes has the inside track, but Smart Gilas operations manager Butch Antonio played it coy, saying the national team program would take off with a meeting of the minds among the four coaches in the select group.

Apart from Reyes, who recently steered the Tropang Texters to the PBA Philippine Cup crown, the other candidates are multititled PBA coaches Norman Black, Jong Uichico and Ryan Gregorio.

“We already told coach Rajko that he won’t be rehired as Smart Gilas head coach,” said Antonio.

Toroman, who steered the PH five to a fourth-place performance in the Fiba Asia Championship in Wuhan, China, last year, came to Manila last week to pick up the things he left behind in his apartment and went back to Belgade in a huff.

Antonio said there’s a need to sit down with the coaches during the ongoing 12-day PBA break before the league resumes with the import-flavored Commissioner’s Cup on Feb. 10.

“There’s no fixed date on the meeting but we have to schedule it at once,” said Antonio. “The agenda will be to establish the framework of the program from the candidates to training to tournament schedules.”

Antonio earlier hinted that the core of Smart Gilas would come from Sinag Pilipinas, a talented bunch composed mostly of collegiate players who captured the gold medal in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

Reyes, who has eight PBA titles in a tie for fourth with Uichico, has become a strong contender for the coaching portfolio after sitting as a Toroman assistant in the failed mission to nail an Olympic slot in London last year.

Pang PBA lang yang Chot Reyes na yan. Nag-coach naman na siya ng national team noon kulelat naman ang kinalabasan. Atsaka, Chot Reyes is not well liked by players kasi OA yang m0k0ng na yan. No to Chot Reyes, iba naman.

No to Chot Reyes. What Toroman has achieved is way far to be achieve by Chot Reyes. He’s good in PBA with the attitude of there’s always tomorrow’s game to follow if we lose today that is not applicable international competition. You can see how the Smart Gilas players performed in the PBA as rookies. Most of them shone. They are the batch of rookies that played like a pro as developed by Toroman. Their running game is tremendous. No other batch of rookies that I remember that performed like this before. There’s discipline, motivation and no favoritism with Toroman. Toroman is escalating and polishes every talent of the player which I don’t see in Chot Reyes. Chot Reyes is only good in giving out. Definitely no to Chot Reyes to coach the Smart Gilas 2.

The only reason for not renewing Toroman is salary. No question on who is the better coach. However, at the end ofthe day someone has to pay for the bills and it seems the main sponsor is finding it hard to sustain the program on an extended run. Let’s just hope for the best given the limited resources. Hope springs eternal!

Definitely Chot Reyes don’t deserved to coach our national team. I completely agreed all the comments they had (rhayy, jeth,et,al). If Chot Reyes be our coach, then all of a sudden Philippines basketball will be tormented; Filipinos instead of basketball lovers then turn into basketball annoying. Chot Reyes is so bravado, he even challenged coach Ato Agustin to a fist fight, and even insulted Don-Don Hontiveros

He is not qualified at all.  He has done nothing right when he was a national coach.  hanggang yabang lang yang si reyes.    We will fail once again if siya na naman.

No to Chot Reyes and Yes to Norman Black. Black definitely is the most experienced compared to Reyes.

No to Chot Reyes..

Importante lang talagang gawin nya ay yung Scouting report in different countries in Asia.

lung si chot reyes, sigurado kulelat na naman ang national team natin

  • jaypee vargas

Sponsorship is another topic, but Toroman should be given credit for a descent 4th place finish and at least a contract extension. I agree with previous comments na Instead pataas, mukhang lalagpak nanaman ang Pilipinas. Sayang naman ang nasimulan
