Key Azkals to miss AFC Challenge Cup

By

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals will again be deprived of the best possible talent for the AFC Challenge Cup next month in Nepal.

Filipino-Danish Jerry Lucena and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge have been ruled out of the March 9 to 13 event, while Stephan Schrock is doubtful because of club commitments.

But Azkals manager Dan Palami said there is a big possibility that Fil-Dutch playmaker Paul Mulders and Fil-Danish leftback Dennis Cagara could be available for the matches.

Palami also said that the injury to Chieffy Caligdong was not serious as everyone had feared and the influential winger could be back in action before the Challenge Cup.

Mulders will miss the training camp in Dubai starting next week, but will be released by Dutch club ADO Den Haag for the Challenge Cup, Palami said.

Cagara, who impressed in the 4-0 win over Nepal last year, has signified his intention to reinforce the team in Nepal.

“Jerry’s club wrote to us saying he can’t be released because they are preparing for important matches,” said Palami.

Etheridge will be available for the Feb. 29 friendly against Malaysia at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, but will be unavailable for the Challenge Cup because of his commitment to English club Fulham.

Filipino-German Roland Muller will be tapped in Etheridge’s absence.

Aly Borromeo, the captain and lead central defender, will also miss the Challenge Cup because of an ACL injury, leaving Rob Gier, Jason Sabio and Filipino-Spanish Juan Luis Guirado to man the backline.

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

okay na sana ang comment pero ba’t dinamay pa ang basketball? and PBA? there’s no need for that :)

Connection ng basketball sa mag nagcocomment at nakikipagdebatahan about the status ng football sa Pilipinas? No, really what is your angle? Notetsunosuke44 is right, hindi kelangan mandamay pa. Bitter much sa basketball? And yeah, based on your comment history, you really have deep-seated anger issue with Philippine basketball.

lols PH is the only one doing that? tingnan mo nga olympic athletes ng u.s.a. may mga africans, russians, asians na lahat ng parents nila di amerikano. naging american sila dahil nagpa NATURALIZE. ganyan ang IMPORT. ibang-iba yan sa sitwasyon na isa sa kanilang magulang ay amerikano.
tingnan mo nga FRANCE’S FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM, HALOS WALA KANG MAKITANG FRENCH KASI PURO MGA AFRICANS ANG MGA PLAYERS.
SO ASAN ANG SINASABI MONG WE ARE THE ONLY COUNTRY THAT’S DOING THAT? EH MAS MATINDI PA NGA ANG USA AT FRANCE EH, KASI NATURALIZED ANG SA KANILA AKA IMPORTS BECAUSE NON OF THEIR PARENTS IS AN AMERICAN OR FRENCH, DI TULAD SA ATIN NA ONE OF THEIR PARENTS IS A FILIPINO.

may nalalaman ka pang pinagtatawanan tayo ng buong mundo dahil puro tayo imports. really? tayo lang gumagawa niyan? mas matindi pa nga sila kasi naturalization ginagawa nila.

    SO WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?

kunwari ka pang wala kang sinabing cheating at doing anything illegal eh klarong-klaro sa unang post mo that you implied it when you said this “Eh that’s what you get when you rely on imports. PH is the only country that does that. Other countries teams are laughing at us because ours is the only team that have foreigners”
kahit nga yung timor leste football team sa sea games may mga naturalized portuguese and/or half-portuguese.
SO ASAN NGAYON ANG SINASABI MONG TAYO LANG GUMAGAWA NIYAN?
MAS OKAY PA NGA SA ATIN EH KASI WE CAN STILL CALL THAT PLAYER AS ONE OF OUR OWN KASI ONE OF THEIR PARENTS IS A PINOY. UNLIKE FOR THE CASE SA INDONESIA WHEN WE THEY WON 2 GAMES AGAINST AZKALS ALL 1-0 SCORE, THEY WERE HAPPY AT FIRST KASI PANALO SILA PERO DAYS LATER THEY DIDN’T FEEL PROUD OF THEIR WIN BECAUSE IT WAS A NATURALIZED URUGUAYAN WHO WON THE GAME FOR THEM. HAD IT BEEN A HALF-INDONESIAN/HALF-URUGUAYAN THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD STILL.

kaya nung sinampal sa pagmumukha mo ang FIFA rules regarding players who can and can’t play for a certain country, biglang kambyo ka na to simplistic side-step of mere semantics na lang. kasi pag ipagpilitan mo pang magpalusot kahit wala nang lusot e mas lalo lang nagiging obvious ang pagka-tanga mo. lul!

      NASAPUL MO! :)

The best goalies of the Azkals are those who are already signed up with foreign teams. They are thus usually unavailable when the Azkals have prominent games. While some of the local goalies can be tapped as substitutes, they are not as l proficient as the foreign-based goalies and thus there’s a bigger chance for the Azkals to lose important games. The same situation also applies to some of the other positions on the team, especially the defenders. Hopefully, enough high-quality players for all the positions can be locally based so that all or most of the Azkals can practice and play together regularly. This is why it is important to develop the local UFL teams so that high-quality half-Filipino players who grew up abroad can be based locally instead of abroad.

I don’t disagree with you cuz I know that stuff already but you are just arguing semantics.  I never said we were cheating or doing anything illegal.

PHtaxpayer, your a stupid, moron, idiot person!!! anong imports??!! bobo!!!

I think we are in the wrong region. If our team are Fil-euro players, we should play in Eurpope. Europe International games are in-synched with their club games.

There we go again…Azkals never get to play as complete team.  How can they be expected to win against other teams who play together for a long time?  We may have all the stars in the team but if they seldom play as a team we cannot win.  Football is a team play.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, its kinda frustrating. But we still need to support the team all the way right? Go AZKALS!

    • Anonymous

Eh that’s what you get when you rely on imports.  PH is the only country that does that.  Other countries teams are laughing at us because ours is the only team that have foreigners.  Other countries develop their local players then when they get good enough, the best foreign teams recruit them.  Tayo its the opposite.  So…beggars can’t be choosers.

Only their mother is Filipino.  Their father is a foreigner and they are really foreigners.

Ikaw ata tanga…that’s why PH sports has gone down in the past 40 years because of this practice of importing.  It started in the Marcos days when the PH Sports czar wanted to win a gold medal in the Olympics.  It’s precisely the tamad-way to do it.  The right way to do it is through grass-roots level development and govt support.  Look at China…40 years ago they were nothing…today they have NBA players and are Olympic heavyweights.  Did they recruit Chinese foreigners abroad?

        Tamad ka ata mag-aral.

The member of the Azkals are not imports. They are half-Filipino so, according to FIFA rules are fully entitled to play for the Philippines (they must play only for one country of their parents so if they play for the Philippines, they are not allowed to play for another country). Foreigners (non-citizens) are not allowed to play for the national teams but they can play for commercial teams and clubs. Every other country, including the USA and the Middle Eastern countries are also scouting for good players that are half-citizens to help improve their team. It’s just that they also have a large pool of homegrown and home-based local players so they can build a deeper bench.

correction sir. they are still imports because they dont have philippine passports yet.

sa fifa rules,  any foreigner can represent to any country as long as you havent played to any international senior games. So bloods doesnt matter if they are half filipino or not (they wont test your DNA or whatever).

It’s not only philippines who are doing this. Like Brazilians that never called for very tough Brazil team,  Ailton played for Qatar and Deco played for Portugal
The world cup winner france were compose of Argentinian (David Trezeguet), Senegalese (Patrick Vieira), Thierry Henry (Canadian, Martinique), Robert Pires (Portoguese/Spanish/etc),  Zinidene Zidane (Algerian). . The list are long.

Pero regardless on any nationality and if they are committed for our national team. We should all welcome.

        Cheers!
