08:44 AM August 24, 2010

MANILA, Philippines—World Boxing Council (WBC) president Don Jose Sulaiman pulled the plug on a potential mismatch between Filipino featherweight Joan de Guia and undefeated Juan Carlos Burgos for the WBC Youth world title scheduled for Sept. 11 inGuadalajara, Mexico.   De Guia was set to battle Burgos in a fight card that also features Mexican legend Erik Morales and former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa.   “Following your information and advice we have informed the promoter (listed as Luis Villuendas) that he must change the rival of Burgos,” the WBC chief said in an e-mail to the Inquirer, which tipped him off on the possible mismatch. “De Guia is out and they will sign someone else with merits.”   The Inquirer sought  Sulaiman’s comments after learning that the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) had not cleared de Guia to fight and that there was a gross mismatch in the offing.   De Guia won his last fight Monday via a sixth-round technical knockout, but his opponent, Dexter Mendoza, prior to the fight, had lost his last five matches by either KO or TKO.   Before that, De Guia lost to Ronald Pontillas via a 7th round knockout. De Guia now has 11 wins, 11 losses and 4 draws with 2 knockouts.   Burgos is ranked No. 1 in the world by the WBC and is a promising, hard hitting 22-year-old who has a record  of 25-0 with 18 knockouts.
