Ateneo, FEU rip inferior enemy

By

ATENEO coasted to a straight-set victory over Southwestern University, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19, to complete a Group A sweep of the Shakey’s V-League eliminations yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

The Lady Eagles, with top scorers Fille Cainglet and Thai Phee Nok Kesinee playing just hard enough, needed only 66 minutes to post their fourth straight victory.

Alyssa Valdez paced the Lady Eagles’ balanced attack with 14 points, including 10 off spikes.

Earlier, Far Eastern University clipped National University, also in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20, to claim its second win in three outings in Group A.

The victory assured the Lady Tamaraws of a quarterfinal berth along with Ateneo and Group B teams San Sebastian and University of Santo Tomas.

Rosemarie Vargas powered the Lady Tamaraws by unloading 15 of her 17 points on spikes. FEU’s Thai guest player Eve Sanorseang added 12 points.

“The players executed our game plan well,” said FEU coach Nes Pamillar. “But we need to make more adjustments to improve our game.”

The Lady Bulldogs slipped to 1-3, while the Cebu-based Lady Cobras absorbed their third straight setback.

Cainglet and Gretchen Ho had nine points apiece for the Lady Eagles, while Kesinee chipped in eight.

“We ended up playing in our opponents’ tempo in the last set, but it still turned out OK,” said Ateneo coach Roger Gorayeb.

With the loss, the Lady Cobras must win against Perpetual Help tomorrow to stay in contention in the quarterfinal race. With a report from Randolph B. Leongson, Contributor
