USLS tossers, Lady Altas eye V-L q’finals

By

AIMING to improve on their erratic showing, Perpetual Help and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod hope to nail quarterfinal berths against separate opponents on the penultimate day of the Shakey’s V-League eliminations today.

The Lady Altas clash with the winless Southwestern University in a 2 p.m. Group A match while the Lady Stingers tangle with another struggling squad in Adamson in a Group B encounter at 4 p.m. at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

“All we need to focus on is our teamwork,” assistant coach Carl Barredo said of his Lady Stingers, who tote a 1-2 card.

Group A leaders Ateneo (4-0) and Far Eastern University (2-1) and unbeaten Group B squads San Sebastian (3-0) and University of Santo Tomas (3-0) have already claimed half of the eight quarterfinal seats.

The Lady Altas, the reigning NCAA champions, showed resilience in outlasting National University, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-12, yet surprisingly floundered in straight sets versus Ateneo, 25-14, 25-20, 25-13.

Just recently, the Lady Stingers also stunned Letran, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 14-25, 15-10, but couldn’t muster the same form against UST and San Sebastian.

On Sunday night, the Tigresses stayed unbeaten in three games after sweeping the Lady Stingers, 25-23, 25-12, 25-14. With a report from Randolph B. Leongson, Contributor
