Ang Ladlad reminds Pacquiao: Be careful on gay remarks

By

MANILA, Philippines—For his alleged snide remarks about homosexuality, gay rights group Ang Ladlad on Thursday reminded Sarangani Representative Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao of his responsibility as a lawmaker.

Although the group respects Pacquiao’s opposition against US President Barack Obama’s support for same sex marriage, he needs to exercise caution when making such statements, said Bemz Benedito, Ang Ladlad’s first congressional nominee.

In an interview with the National Conservative Examiner, Pacquiao was quoted as commenting on gay marriage, thrust to the top of the news agenda last week when President Barack Obama said homosexuals should be allowed to wed.

“God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man,” said Pacquiao, adding: “God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they are in love with each other.

“It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.”

The piece said “Pacquiao’s directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin,” and cited Leviticus 20:13, saying: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.

“They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

But Pacquiao said he had only stated his opposition to gay marriage, and did not even know the biblical quotation.

“I’m not against gay people — I have a relative who is also gay,” he said in comments on his official website, adding that the Leviticus quote should not be linked to him.

“I didn’t say that, that’s a lie. I didn’t know that quote from Leviticus because I haven’t read the Book of Leviticus yet,” he said.

The author of the article had clarified that Pacquiao didn’t cite the Bible passage.

Pacquiao, formerly known for enjoying late-night parties and gambling, now ends almost every training day with a bible session in an auditorium in the hotel which serves as his training camp.

Benedito said the group will still support Pacquiao in his nearing match against American boxer Timothy Bradley and hopes that “someday, he will understand and accept us in his heart.”

Same-sex marriage is not in the platform of Ang Ladlad, said Benedito.

Benedito is set to file his candidacy at the Commission on Elections on Friday. With Agence France-Presse

It is supremely ironic that it is the gays and lesbians who seem to understand what it means to get married – that this is a commitment and partnership between two people who love each other, in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer and till death do they part.

And yet, we have men and women who pervert and abuse marriage by betraying their wedding vows, by getting married and divorcing five minutes later, by breaking up families.  We have marital rape and children used in a tug of war between mothers and fathers.  Conversely, we also have people who are so selfish that they use the so-called unbreakable vows of marriage as an excuse not to terminate a relationship that is long over and keep reopening emotional wounds that should have long healed.

When I think of gays and lesbians getting married, I think of the picture of that old lesbian couple who were the first in line to get married when they legalized gay marriage in New York.  One of them was already in a wheelchair.  Both of them were already silver haired and yet the love between them was so tangible, I felt blessed looking at them.

I am a straight woman and I often think that this is God’s way of telling us what we are missing.  And it saddens me that so-called Christians use this as an excuse to quote Bible verses and shout damnation at a bunch of people who aren’t even hurting anyone, who simply want to be together and have the same rights as heterosexual couple do.

Any time you guys want to get all Biblical, please recall that Jesus Himself was a radical who challenged what was current Jewish thoughts, laws and beliefs.  He knew what was happening then and is still happening now.  You’re all so caught up in the letter of the law that you’re missing its spirit.

Let’s keep an open mind.  Gays and lesbians getting married and raising children isn’t the threat to “family values” you’re all thinking about.  It is the couples who constantly fight in front of their children, abuse their spouses AND their kids that are the real threat.

Marriage was made for people of opposite sexes who have also been physically designed (by God) to perpetuate the human race so that man will not one day vanish from the face of the earth. Homosexuality on the other hand is mere identity crisis, same-sex  attraction and sexual pleasure and nothing more. There is no perpetuation of the human race in what they do. In fact it is anti-procreation of the human race as it tries to compete for men. However they are not being prevented from doing what they want with each other but they should not push the idea of same-sex marriage as it is a falsehood on a grand scale.

Careful? Prior censorship? I think the world is sacrificing too much for the delusion of a few people- are they special people now that you have to walk on nails just not to offend them? What if they offend you by their mere presence?
This gay marriage issue is part of the insanity of the dying days of the WEst- it is near bankrupt, and its bankrupt values are left to pester other areas with more sensibility. In 5 years time, China will be wealthier than the US, the Asian Century will set in & inevitably Asian values will reign. Gay marriage will become a joke so what for are these noise? Lots of noise over nothing after all

Take things into its historical perspective. Then ignore or laugh at the noise. Lots of noise over nothing

Manny’s disagreement with same sex marriage is not a form of hate nor a condemnation to gays/lesbians.What I don’t like the most is there reactions, they’ve tried to put Manny down by calling sponsors to drop him, ban in the mall??? for that, I will condemned you (gays/lesbians) for being stupid and ignorant…
