Shakey’s V-League: Ateneo shakes off poor start to down UST

MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo responded after an opening-set beating to repulse University of Santo Tomas, 7-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20, Sunday night and become the number seed in the semifinals of the Shakey’s V-League Season 9 First Conference at the frenzied Arena in San Juan.

Fille Cainglet powered the still unbeaten Lady Eagles with 16 of her 17 points from kills while Thai import Phee Nok Kesinee added 15.

The Tigresses appeared to have left it all out in the opener as they ran out of steam in the following sets.

Maika Ortiz struggled with just five points as Judy Caballejo’s 17 markers just couldn’t pull UST through.

Maru Banaticla committed a service error that sealed the win for Ateneo.

Guest player Suzanne Roces put the Lady Eagles ahead, 22-17, before Kesinee got them to match point.
