NHI OKs Asunto’s rendition of Lupang Hinirang

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American teen singer Kirby Asunto’s interpretation of the country’s national anthem for the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley bout has earned the approval of the National Historical Institute.

A Radyo Inquirer 990AM report quoted NHI executive director Ludovico Badoy as saying that Asunto’s version of the Lupang Hinirang passed their standards despite its slower tempo.

The NHI also allowed certain mistakes Asunto committed in pronouncing Tagalog words since the 14-year-old singer spent more time in the United States than the Philippines, Badoy said.

Asunto was personally chosen by Pacquiao to sing the national anthem  during Sunday’s fight held at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The NHI has been keeping tabs on singers’ renditions of the national anthem for Pacquiao’s fights due to the massive attention it receives.

Yes, the rendition is ok but, the result of the fight is not ok! Unlike in the previous Pacquiao fight where there is so much brouhaha on this issue of singing the national anthem, the nation is in a happy mood because he won in convincing fashion and this issue is on the sideline in spite of legal threats from NHI to hitherto enthusiastic song artist concerned…..

Kung sa US nga non-issue ang pa-iba-ibang style ng Star Spangled Banner, bakit tayo masyadong concerned dyan. Di ba nga we promote artistic talents?

PH is the only patriotic country that checks and approves the manner the national anthem is rendered. It can be one of our nationalistic values but where are we today? In contrast to other democratic countries, no stringent preservations but lots of progress.

Kirby’s rendition was just okay. Maturity in her voice is lacking because of her age.

We have a LAW that details how the National Anthem should be sung.

Go ahead and change the law if you want it sung any other way.

      • mfdo

pst: critique at large: the singer is an AMERICAN ? No Leeway ?? haha

She is NOT A FILIPINO .. trust me .. that is more insulting .. personally to see an American – though formerly Filipino – sing the national anthem

      • Karabukov

I would be proud if the Filipino National Anthem is sung by a white, black or a non-citizen. You want to set up rules too, who should sing it?

      • Karabukov

A stupid law, if you ask me. Micro-managing how the National Anthem should be sung is stifling, parochial, atrociously dogmatic and frankly, shows our immaturity as a nation.

      • Keith_P

Like I said, if you don’t like it go change it.

Whining and b!tching on the comments section of PDI won’t achieve anything.

There are bad laws and there are bad laws. And there are evil laws and ridiculous laws. This is one of the latter that may even be best ignored and let the enforcers make a fool of themselves. Look at the brouhaha that came out of Martin Nievera’s performance in one of Pacquiao’s recent bouts. I don’t even know what came out of it.

Then there are evil laws that are worth dying for to do away with, such as apartheid in South Africa before Nelson Mandela rallied his people against every vestige of it.

Katorse lang pala siya? Hehee.. ang mga bata talaga ngayon.

  • just_and_equitable

    she jinxed pacquiao!

      Di naman seguro.

Bulag lang talaga ung mga judges ng Nevada commission.
