Pinoy shuttlers’ run ends

PETER Gabriel Magnaye and Philip Joper Escueta reached the main draw of the men’s doubles before bowing out of the Djarum Indonesia Open badminton tournament in Jakarta recently.

Still unranked worldwide, Magnaye and Escueta did give a good account of themselves with big wins against Indonesian opponents at the Istoria Senayan Stadium.

The National University standouts first got back from one set down to down Rangga Yave Rianto and Kusdianto Seiko Whyu, 20-22, 21-18, 21-16. They later became the first PH pair to make it to the main draw of the tough Super Series event when they stunned Rhamat Adianto and Angriawan Berry, 14-21, 21-12, 21-15.

But their amazing run was cut short by Wijaya Rendra and Rian Sukmawan, who  brought them back to earth with a 22-20, 21-16 win. Marc Anthony Reyes
