Donaire wins via unanimous decision over Mathebula

UNANIMOUS WINNER Nonito Donaire of the Philippines celebrates a unanimous decision over Jeffery Mathebula of South Africa during the WBO IBF Super Bantamweight title fight at The Home Depot Center on July 7, 2012, in Carson, California. Harry How/Getty Images/AFP

MANILA, Philippines — Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire settled for a unanimous decision over Jeffrey Mathebula to unify the WBO and IBF world titles Sunday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

The Judges had it 117-110, 118-109 and 119-108.

Donaire floored Mathebula with a crushing left hook in the fourth round but the South African managed to beat the count and was saved by the bell.

The four-division champion Donaire, who gave up four inches in height, looked for the kill in the ensuing rounds but Mathebula surprisingly was able to recover and force the decision.

Donaire racked up his 28th straight win. He hasn’t lost since Rosendo Sanchez beat him via unanimous decision on March 10, 2001.

Donaire, who improved his record to 29-1 with 18 knockouts, rocked Mathebula anew in the fifth with solid lefts.

Mathebula tried to fight from the outside to exploit his size advantage and had some moments when he was able to connect.

The writer’s incorrect grammar seems to spoil Donaire’s win. Based on the above sentence structure, it should be “last March 10, 2011″. Prep “on” is used for forthcoming complete date while “in” for month and year only (i.e. in March, 2011). Mr. Giongco, you’ve attracted and diverted our attention…

Back to the main event…..we pray and hope that Donaire will not accept any fight(s) in the notorious Nevada. California and Texas are safer and better venues. CONGRATS!….my real CHAMP!!!

Another filipino boxing great in the making! Cogratulations NONITO DONAIRE. Try to move to the next weight division where the bigger money is. Keep it up!

Mark Giongco, review your grammar! You don’t say “in March 10, 2001.” Preposition should be ON.
Anyway, at least you’re showing some improvement. Hindi na masyadong TH ang storya mo.

    • Pitbulldog

When you say on, it means forthcoming o darating pa lang.  Tanong ko lang, kailan ba darating ang March 10, 2001? Sana sinabi mo na lang palitan yong “in” dahil out yan sa pang-unawa mo.

      • Toy Rant

“in” is used if there is no exact date (e.g. in March). “On” is correct preposition to  use (past, present, or future event). Using “on” is not indicative of time, it’s just the correct preposition.

in + month or year- In March, In 2003
on + date (with the year or without it) or day of the week- On April 2, On March 3, 1999, On Saturday

      • Toby Magwire

and that is whether forthcoming or not.  “I was born on May 20, 1969″, that is CERTAINLY NOT FORTHCOMING.  “I was born in the Summer of ’69 (with apologies to Bryan Adams)”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QUS4K55KUVDCLHVHZLIWA2T26U Dean V

the proper prepostion is  ”in” march 20, 2011 because the wrtier already used “since” in his sentence.
If he used “on” it would have been forthcoming.

terrible coverage by abs-cbn! they announced and congratulated donaire as the winner BEFORE the 12th round. what were they thinking? they just robbed viewers of the thrill and enjoyment of finishing the fight. very foolish and unprofessional! and ronnie nathanielz is annoying. so biased. mentions only nonito’s punches but never giving credit to his opponent. i hope abs-cbn never covers major fight anymore! never gonna happen though.

    • Toby Magwire

credit for what? for those flurry of punches which were so negligible that Donaire was more than willing to take just to land his own punches?

  • pnoy0612

    congrats!!!
