LYTHAM, England—Asian Tour number one Juvic Pagunsan overcame his nerves to fire a one-over par 71 on Thursday in his major debut at the British Open.

The Filipino standout, who won last season’s Order of Merit, had two birdies against three bogeys, the last coming on the 18th hole at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

“I would have taken this at the start of the round,” Pagunsan said. “I was a bit nervous on the first tee when they called my name, being my first major and with the crowds there.

“However, it was very exciting to come out for the first day. I focused on my swing and how I wanted to put my ball on the fairway. If you miss it’s tough. I missed my drive on the left on 18 and I was actually lucky to make bogey.”

While Pagunsan, 34, gave himself a solid chance to make the cut, his putter let him down several times.

“I hit it really good but missed a lot of putts and a lot of opportunities,” he said. “The touch wasn’t good enough. Hopefully tomorrow.”

He was disappointed to bogey two of the par three holes on his outward nine.

“Missed my tee shots on five and nine. Nine is not really good as I only had a short iron on the tee. It was really bad,” he said.

“Towards the end of my round, it was a bit freezing on my hands when the winds started to blow a bit. It wasn’t good enough but I’ll take this score.”

“My wife said to try to make the cut first and then think about the last two days. I have been talking to her every night. She has been telling me to relax and enjoy the occasion. I’m trying.”

Good luck Juvic… You are an inspiration not only to us golf enthusiasts, but to all of us, pinoys…

The Inquirer has published no story on Juvic before this one. Sad. And Juvic needs our moral support. After all, he’s struggled on his own to make it this far. Juvic has made the cut and will play the weekend at The Open. Can you imagine that! Every time I see our flag beside his name in the leaderboard listings at ESPN, Yahoo, etc., I feel very proud, and yet very little is being said about his participation.

CONGRATULATIONS, Juvic!!! I do not play golf but I follow any sport where a kababayan plays!  Wow, as a Filipino, I am very proud of you as other Filipinos I believe are also!  Keep it up if not better.  Our prayers and hopes are with you.

Excellent performance, Juvic. If I am not mistaken you are the first Filipino golfer to ever made the cut in the British Open. With that you made history already and your landing in the top 10 of the tournament will make every kababayan even prouder of you.I am living abroad now but somehow haven’t forgotten ties with the country and this sport more particularly it was your father who taught me the fundamentals of the game.Sadly after playing for more than 20 years, I have yet to break 100 again.

Juvic scores 3 over par 143 for his two rounds and tied for 68 and enough to make a cut! Good luck Juvic!

  • Beersheva

Considering it’s a first major and considering the performance of the rest of the field, one over in the first round is quite good. Hopefully, your game will settle down on the second day and you will make the cut. Good luck Juvic!

Go Juvic.. While a top 10 finish would still be outstanding, given the strong line-up in the Open, I’ll be watching and rooting for you as you attempt to become the 2012 British Open Champion.  Best of luck kabayan!
