Rains force UAAP, NCAA cancellation

By

The heavy rains that pounded Metro Manila for the past days forced the country’s two premier varsity leagues to cancel their games anew.

NCAA officials said Wednesday that the last two playdates of the first round of seniors basketball—including the double-header scheduled today—will be moved to a later time.

“Due to the recent weather condition brought about by the monsoon rains and in consideration of the recovery situation in flooded areas, and while other NCAA-member schools are being used as evacuation sites, the management committee has decided [that the games] be postponed,” Mancom chair Fr. Vic Calvo said in a statement.

Jose Rizal University and Letran, San Beda and San Sebastian were supposed to battle on Thursday while the Mapua-Arellano and Letran-San Beda double header were the scheduled Saturday games.

The UAAP, which already called off its men’s basketball games last Wednesday, also postponed its games set this Saturday at Philsports Arena.

“In consideration of the recovery situation in flood-stricken areas, and the use of most government facilities as evacuation centers, the UAAP will be postponing the games… until we are able to confirm venues,” the league said in a statement.

The UAAP also released a new schedule when men’s action resumes this Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

University of Santo Tomas will shoot for a fourth straight triumph against University of the East at 4 p.m., after La Salle and Adamson try to snap their losing skids at 2 p.m.

The UAAP men’s games originally scheduled this weekend will be played on Aug. 18 and 19.

In the NCAA, Calvo said the Mancom will meet on Friday to finalize the new seniors schedule. With Mark Giongco, INQUIRER.net
