SANDUGO-San Sebastian punctuated its first-round dominance with a straight-set disposal of Far Eastern University, 25-8, 25-23, 25-13, in the Shakey’s V-League Open yesterday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Thai ace Jeng Bualee drilled all of her 14 points on kills as the Lady Stags completed a five-game sweep of the first half of the double-round elimination.
Cagayan Valley also had an emphatic wrap up of its first-round campaign as the Rising Suns blasted Philippine Navy, 24-14, 25-14, 25-9, in the first match.
Sandra delos Santos fired seven of her team’s 10 service aces in a 19-point effort in the victory that secured the Rising Suns the third spot with a 3-2 record.
“We hope we can sustain this,” said coach Mike Rafael said of his Rising Suns, the newcomer who also forged a straight-set win over first conference champion Ateneo recently.
Bualee’s fellow Thai Utaiwan import Kaensing hit 13 points, built on 10 spikes and three blocks, while Suzanne Roces and Joy Benito tossed in nine points each for the Lady Stags.
The title-favorite Sandugo pulled off the easy victory even minus former MVP Nene Bautista, who had been bothered by a hurting knee since her last outing.
“Everyone has been stepping up,” said Sandugo coach Roger Gorayeb.
Honey Tubino had 12 points, including a couple of blocks, while Joy Cases added 11 markers for the Rising Suns.
The Lady Sailors wound up with a 1-4 slate, while the Lady Tamaraws fell to 0-5.
