UP makes UAAP women’ beach volley semis; UST duo sweeps elims

By

MANILA, Philippines—University of the Philippines barged into the final four but University of Santo Tomas got a ride to the finals with a huge edge in the 75th UAAP women’s beach volleyball Wednesday.

Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo put away Ateneo Lady Eagles, 21-19, 21-19, in the UE Caloocan sandcourt for a 7-0 sweep of the eliminations.

The Tigresses, armed with a ‘thrice-to-beat’ incentive, await their opponent in the finals as the three squads, which made it to the final four, battle it out in a stepladder format.

Aia Del Mundo and Pau Genido gave the Lady Maroons the final spot in the semifinals with an intese 21-13, 14-21, 15-13 victory over Dindin Santiago and Jen Reyes of National University.

The Lady Eagles, doomed by two setbacks via default in the eliminations, concluded their campaign with a 1-6 slate while the Lady Bulldogs missed the bus by a hairline as they drop to 3-4.

La Salle defeated Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda of Adamson behind the efforts of Wensh Tiu and Kim Fajardo, 15-21, 21-19, 15-10, to gain top spot in the ladder.

La Salle (6-1) will face the winner of the match between Adamson (5-2) and UP (4-3) for the remaining finals slate.
