MANILA, Philippines – Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual combined for 45 points as San Sebastian turned back Jose Rizal University, 73-67, Saturday in the opening day of the NCAA Season 87 at the Araneta Coliseum.
With main man Calvin Abueva serving a one-game suspension, Sangalang dominated at both ends of the floor with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
Pascual meanwhile, fired 20 points including a dagger jumper with 41.6 left that put the Stags ahead, 68-63.
“I told them not to make excuses just because Calvin is not there,” said rookie coach and former San Sebastian guard Topex Robinson.
Ronnel Carampil fired 19 points for the Heavy Bombers, who drew a sub-par performance from marksman Nate Matute.
Matute only had five points on a woeful two-of-10 shooting from the field.
Robinson also played in the PBA.
