Younghusbands ditched by Azkals for Peace Cup

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Azkals will be without leading international scorer Phil Younghusband and brother James when they vie in the Paulino Alcantara Peace Cup starting Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The lineup released Sunday by the team did not include the Fil-British brothers, who missed the training camp in the United States and the match against Malaysia last June because of prior commitments before coming back to play in the series of friendlies early this month.

The Azkals are toughening up for the AFF Suzuki Cup in November and have matches lined up against Bahrain and Kuwait in October.

“Having greatly benefited from Suzuki Cup 2010, we expect our players to work harder than ever this year,” a statement from the team said yesterday.

“Unfortunately, not everyone in the team could assure us of this; a few have already signified their unavailability for some crucial activities leading up to the tournament.”

The team added: “While this is admittedly a setback in our plans, we understand that family obligations and club/work commitments sometimes take precedence.”

Speaking through their manager Cathy Rivilla, the Younghusband brothers expressed shock over the decision, which was relayed to them by coach Michael Weiss, who, she said, only informed the brothers via a text message.

“Anything else after the Peace Cup remains to be seen,” Weiss told the brothers whom he tried to reach Sunday.

Sources said the brothers could not commit to the Azkals’ schedule in October because of their commitment to their United Football League club, Loyola Meralco Sparks.

The Sparks still have semifinal matches in the Singapore Cup in the first week of October, which also marks the start of the UFL Cup.

Sparks chair Randy Roxas said they are ready to release the Younghusbands for national team duty on the Fifa dates.

“We remain 100 percent committed to the national team,” the brothers said through Rivilla. “We do not know what transpired as we have been in talks with coach Weiss. But we respect whatever decision management has and we will be available for whatever call up.”

Sus, kung manghusga ka naman kala mo you wouldn’t do the same thing if you were in their shoes…ha..ha..ha..all these athletes want to make money…do you think Beckham enjoys showing off his underwear just for kicks???  The international world class athletes all do it because they support a family or a lavish lifestyle, the Philippines just needs to get with the program….

Hindi sila mukhang pera. Normal lang na mag demand. pwede naman na pag usapan ang mga demands pero ano ang ginawa sa Younghusband? Hindi tama. Sumikat at nakilala ang AZKALS sa Pilipinas because of them. Ang puso at dedication sa laro ay naipakita nila. They are a good example of a Filipino athletes. I’m pretty sure that the heart of most Filipinos is with Phil and James. Mabuhay kayong dalawa.

The team is still strong aand quite capable to hold on its own and the team is even stronger when the key players are available, I stand humbly to be corrected if im wrong to say the last time Philippines won a competition was way back in 1913? There is one thing i need to say to Filipinos who had thought  that Malaysia team does not have mixed foreign blood but pure local players, although it is true the Malaysia soccer team does not have mixed foreign blood in the team but we do have foreign mixed blood sportsmen . ( i know of at least one ) in other sport fields.
Come tomorrow, it the starts of the opening match, and right now, indiferences in views and opinions  ought to be set aside, as the players will troop out in honor to play their hearts out for the nation and fans like you  will show your patriotism by cheering and supporting them all the way. It is your beloved country The Philippines, the team presenting and it is your country you are cheering for ultimately besides the team. So come in unity, as patriotic fans to support and cheer your national country team .
Singapore Cup is a cup where the best clubs are competing each other amongst the Asean teams that were invited, which also need the fans support as well, Likewise the Peace Cup where its is the national level. Over the years i had played soccer with besides my fellow countrymen, i played with the Thais, Vietnamese, Myanmars, Singaporeans, Indonesians  some Europeans and Aussies but i always remember a young Filipino boy by the name of Tito,  ( i only know him by that name) who once played alongside with us here in Malaysia, His style of play caught my eyes, elegant, speedy and skillful, I was the  seniornplayer that supposed  to look over him, He showed me that Filipinos has the talent and skills to excel this beautiful game.he was only with us for two years before his family returned back home  It was close to  30 years ago. Today i had aged much but i never forget Tito. If not for Tito i wont be here to post my comments
In times like this your team need your unwaivering support all the more, It is not because they are mixed foreign blood, or pure filipinos that your support is needed most, it is your beloved country The Philippines, that need your support , to support these players who are chosen to present the country honour. Come as one come in unity come in love come in droves of thousands and millions cheering the team all the way. I share you one strategy which some of you may had forgotten, You know your presence, whether in the staduims or  infront of your tv box, could make a difference for the team to raise their game high to a level where they may even win the trophy,  Never doubt fans support as the fan supports can turn a match almost seemly defeat into victory.
So keep the flame alive and keep on playing the beautiful game and God bless the team and all

Our sports leaders should be “shot”, figuratively, for being self-centered, vain, stupid and a bunch of idiots.
The same happened to the “Boat Team” that we had winning several “gold medals and trophies”  but were NOT SUPPORTED by our so-called sport leaders and experts

  • JanofVA

I wouldn’t be surprised if Weiss is being pressured to push out majority of the Fil-Fors, probably by the same forces that accused them of abuse.  It’s just odd that all the good players that were left out just happened to be Fil-Fors.  Hays…here I thought Philippines was serious about contending in the international field, hindi pa rin pala…politics as usual pa rin pala diyan…kaya walang asenso…sayang naman….I was ready to see the Azkals sa international field, sa FIFA…hays…..

  • PHtaxpayer

What?  They score most of the goals and are the main play makers.  Azcals need them!

Why drop them to roster? let them decide.
