MANILA, Philippines—A hattrick by Dennis Wolf capped a dominant night for the Philippines, clobbering Macau, 5-0, and keeping a clean slate in the Philippine Football Peace Cup Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Wolf struck two goals in the first half then completed his first international hattrick in the 64th minute, helping the Azkals take the lead in the four-national tournament.

“(It was a) dream come true,” said Wolf, whose last goal for the national team happened way back in February.

Shrugging off a cut on his eyebrow, Wolf still managed to bang in his second goal just before the intermission after opening up the scoring in the 22nd minute.

Patrick Reichelt, whose lone goal saved the Philippines over Guam, 1-0, Tuesday, meanwhile, put the finishing touches with a final goal in the 69th minute.

Carli De Murga also pulled one back just four minutes into the second half to triple the Azkals’ lead and ease off the tension for the rest of the night.

The Philippines—who is playing sans top goal scorer Phil Younghusband and brother James—have kept its clean sheet after two matches.

The victory puts the Azkals ahead in points, and builds up momentum as they go up against one of the tougher squads in Chinese-Taipei on Saturday.

The Taiwanese blanked still winless Guamanians, 2-0, in the first match.

This is more of a training camp ‘just got televised’ for the fans. The real test is the Suzuki Cup..

The Azkals are playing more confidently and more aggressively making well use of the the left and right flanks as well the center of the field. A lot of credit should also be given to Matt Uy (36) who was excellent deploying the ball as a midfielder. We should not expect too much from the Azkals though, our football still has a long way to go in this basketball-crazy country. Nonetheless, we should support our national team and be present in their games whenever they play here. As fans, we should be buying tickets to show our love for the beautiful game.

The Philippines has depended for a long time on Phil and James Younghusband for a longish time now (just as we all depended on Ian Araneta and Chieffy Caligdong), and they’ve deservedly won honors for themselves and for the country in various tournaments. But they won’t always be around so it is good that other talented Filipino players be asked to step up and perform under pressure, to deliver the victories that the local football ecosystem needs to keep on growing. Let’s congratulate and celebrate the goals by Denis Wolf, Patrick Reichelt, and Carli de Murga, who may have foreign blood and upbringing but continue to play for the Philippine flag. Let the next generation of home-grown Filipino teen players develop fast to take over from the veterans a few years from now. Let’s all pull together to cheer the Azkals and hope that they win the Peace Cup finals versus Chinese Taipei this coming Saturday. Go Philippines!

Could it be that the Azkals are better without the Younghusband brothers? With them in the pitch, the other players seemed to organize their plays around the two brothers, especially Phil. But without them, the rest of the players appeared to feel less constrained and were freer to make the moves that allowed the player in the best position to score to do so, instead of often trying to feed the ball to Phil. I don’t know, I could be wrong, but that is how I see it.

the plot thickens, only proves the younghusbands are dispensable at this point..too bad angel, you have to work hard for the money now…

these are minnows we are defeating. we haven’t seen how we’ll fare against top goalkeepers and top defenses. our defensive line hasn’t even been tested yet, and Sacapano has still to see a quality strike from anybody.
