Ateneo comes back to edge NU behind Valdez

By

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo rose from two sets down to nip much-improved National University, 16-25, 30-32, 25-21, 25-13, 15-13 Saturday in the UAAP Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Alyssa Valdez powered her way to 28 points, 26 on attacks, to keep the Lady Eagles the lone unbeaten team at 4-0.

Myla Pablo paced the Lady Bulldogs with 22 hits but her last attempt in the deciding set got blocked as Ateneo went on to win the thriller.

Valdez put the Lady Eagles in match point with back-to-back kills. Fille Cainglet added 14 markers while Jem Ferrer had 23 excellent sets.

An NU win would’ve put the Lady Bulldogs in first-place tie with the Lady Eagles but instead NU dropped to fourth along with UST with a 2-2 ledger.

Congrats to the Lady Eagles.  It was all about heart.  The Lady Bulldogs proved to be formidable foes and will certainly be a force to reckon with in the second round, perhaps even the championship round.
