Resma sets up twin title duels against Iglupas
LAPU-LAPU CITY—Top national age-group players Roxanne Resma and Khim Iglupas arranged title showdowns in the girls’ 16-under and 18-under divisions even as Adithya Karunaratne and Bryan Otico also reached the finals in two categories of the Truflex national age-group tennis championships yesterday at Haruhay Dream Resort here.
Resma crushed Jana Pages, 6-2, 6-2, in the 16-under, and Maria Dominique Ong, 6-4, 6-3 in the 18-under to justify her top ranking in both categories while Iglupas downed Ong, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the 16-under and Pages, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the 18-under to reach the finals.
Karunaratne also booked final slots in the girls’ 12-under and 14-under at Lapu Lapu City Hall tennis courts while Otico advanced within a win of ruling the boys’ 14-under and 16-under.
In the girls’ 12-under, Karunaratne whipped Alexandra Eala, 6-1, 6-0, to advance against top seed Caryn Bless Guarde, who edged Win Ka Lin, 6-2, 7-5, in the other semis.
Karunaratne downed Zethley Mae Alferez, 6-2, 6-3, in the girls’ 14-under and will shoot for the title against Angela Cabaral, who booted out Shynne Villareal, 6-2, 6-1.
Otico made it to the two title matches at the expense of Jan Godfrey Seno. He outlasted the top seed Seno, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the 14-under and duplicated the feat in the 16-under with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win.
He will take on Fabien Calaud, who downed Michael Francis Eala, 6-, 6-0, for the 14-under crown and top seed Dave Sebastian Mosqueda, who eliminated Emmanuel Vacalares, in the 16-under finals.
In the premier boys’ 18-under, Changmai Necesario pulled off a 6-2, 6-3 win over Marc Norman Enriquez to set up a title duel against Joshua Kinaadman, who drubbed Vacalares, 6-2, 6-2.
In other games at Lapu Lapu City Hall courts, Nio Tria drubbed Jake Christian Unto, 6-2, 6-3, to barge into the finals of the boys’ 12-under. He will next face Tristan Kuok, who ousted Heart Betto, 6-1, 6-0.
