MILAN ? Light welterweight Genebert Basadre, the heaviest Filipino fighter here, proved to be the biggest disappointment for the five-man Philippine boxing team in the XV World Amateur Boxing Championships here.
Basadre, 25, of Cagayan de Oro, dropped a one-sided bout against Myke Carbaho, an average Brazilian, on Friday and was rushed straight to the clinic for check-up and treatment for a profusely bleeding nose.
Basadre, who lost, 10-3, thus joined lightweight Joegin Ladon on the sidelines while his three remaining teammates fight on in the second round.
Light flyweight Harry Tañamor, smallest in the RP team at 48 kilograms, was to clash with Huyhannes Danielyan of Armenia, listed here as the European champion, on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Bantamweight Joan Tipon, winner over a Sri Lankan in the preliminaries, was pitted against Ouradi Abdelhalim, a grizzled Algerian punching machine, later on the same day.
Featherweight Charly Suarez, sensational winner over a rangy Romanian foe Thursday, seeks a second win against lanky Korean Yoo Min-jae on Sunday.
A three-punch blitz by Brazilian Carbaho late in the second round put the score at 8-1 and forced the ring doctor to check on Basadre?s battered nose.
Basadre later blamed his opponent?s thudding uppercuts for his pitiful condition.
He however contributed largely to his woes with an aimless and predictable stance.
Other than the uppercuts, it was Basadre?s painful deficiency in proper techniques that caused the bout to be awfully one-sided.
Carbaho?s coach said they had keenly scouted Basadre and noticed his habit of dropping his right hand in defense.
This flaw was aptly exploited.
An incident late in the third round saw the referee halting the fight with Carbaho down on the floor after Basadre, hopelessly behind on points, waged a desperate offensive.
A punch was landed but no points were recorded and the score stood at 10-3 until the final bell.
